I've put some thought into this subject over the years and notwithstanding the discrepancies of what is and what is not 'new wave' the two songs that epitomize a complete and masterful revolution in the enigmatic baseline are: (bassline please maestro)

Thompson Twins - Hold Me Now
and
If You Leave - OMD

Hold me Now has bass genius generously sprinkled throughout, whereas If You Leave is more near the end and more prominent in the 12" version.

Awesome that someone mentioned A Flock Of Seagulls' "What Am I Supposed To Do"!!! It's an obvious, yet obscure, choice. I guess I'd have to say that Flea's work on Nina Hagen's "What It Is" is ace for me. The Cure's "A Forest" always makes me groove along with it's bassline, too.

I'm rather surprised at the reverence for Peter Hook. Yes, he's got a very unique and signature style, but as a musician, he's not even in the same league as people like Colin Moulding, Bruce Thomas or Graham Maby.

Funny...I was just listening to P.i.L this afternoon, and I love the bass in This Is Not A Love Song. It makes me want to dance every time I hear it.

Good call, QuiteLife, about Until December--that song is extremely catchy just from the bass alone.

Nick Beggs- Kajagoogoo - pretty much anything is just raging but "Ooh To Be Ah" is pretty funky. I love that bassline

John Taylor - Duran Duran - Always in the pocket, solid. "New Religion" is just great!

Leigh Gorman - Bow Wow Wow - an absolute monster bassist. "Mickey Put It Down" from the See Jungle CD is awesome.

Aimee Mann - Til Tuesday - I was bummed when she started playing more guitar in her solo stuff but TT has great basslines. "Love In A Vacuum" in particular.
