What is the appeal of Goth??

Eh, cutting is just another way for kids to prove they're hardcore. Symptom of the way kids grow up these days, crammed into close quarters and supervised by people who rarely see them as individuals (and of course the timeless fact that kids r dum).

When lots of bands were doing their thing, nobody was labelling them as Gothic. The problem with labelling is, that the label needs a description...where tha band ánd the music had to fit in. The same as trying to make your feet try fit for a shoe...

Therefore I can't believe the description depressive etc.
When Killing Joke came out with their 10" Turn to Red, they were heavy on the bassline. That didn't make them reggae or funk either !! It was the diversity of bands and their music, that again differed from song to song, that made other people later on grab Killing Joke, Bauhaus, Virgin Prunes, Suzy and the B. and whatever they could grab in hindsight.

What I think of the label 'Goth' is, that people are dressing scary and making their own rites and cult with it. Any uniformity is actualy silly and uncreative. The good thing of the 'Goth' thing is that bands which were moodily blackish, were picked up by complete new generation. As happened to bands like The Doors. I think those great bands at the time do deserve any new attention from new generations. That's opening new worlds, 'drawn' in the past. Why shouldn't have musical subcultures not honour its definetely honorable past ?

I actually like depressing music, but I always associated goths with wierdos who acted "different" just for the sake of being different, with the goofy make up and all. That's just my 2 cents, as I'm sure some of them are okay.

As for emo, those people are just clowns...... "Emo kids" always seem to be whining about something petty, and once again try to be different just for the sake of being different, just like all their friends. [:D]

Yah, but don't alot of kids around their age whine about petty stuff? Emo kids are some of the biggest elitest I have ever seen.

One thing I've learnt during the past years is that life isn't always wonderful and bright.. and that it's not bad to sometimes go into the dark areas of the self and learn from it. And Goth music it's ideal when doing that... so it shouldn't be criticised fro bieng deppresive.
I see a lot of discussion here about The Cure being goth or not.. I think that maybe if they had followed the line that albums like Faith and Pornography have, we could consider them as goth... we all know that things changed after the Japanese Whispers EP. But The Cure is not goth, it's a band that shows the rainbow of human emotions (from the brightest to the darkest one) and that's why I love them... they can accompany you during a heartbreak, a crisis of the self, a beautiful relationship or jsut when you are having a fun time!!!

For me - goth has a depth, richness, and texture that I don't get anywhere else. I started to say that it seems to fit when I'm in a particular mood - but the truth is, it "fits" all the time.

great british bands like Bauhaus, sisters of mercy, mission UK, Xymox/Clan Of Xymox, Wolfsheim, the Cure, Siouxsie, Fields of the nephilim, Mid-Late 80's killing joke, and much more. Powerful, touching, and intelligent music. Old School goth is the best though.

I love the darker type of music. Just like these. The Cure ranks up there as one of my all time favorite bands. Wolfsheim is one of my favorites as well.

I so love goth.. it's just a natural extension of everything that happens in the world.
I'm not one of those people that can act as evrything's alright and see the world rose-tinted. I tried it and failed so bad at it.
Sometimes things are obscure, complex and not perfect... and it's good that there's a genre that can accompany that sensations.

Being a goth is all about being self-centered, morbid and depressed. That's why there are so many teenage goths. You're expected to be morbid and self-centered, so that's why so many teenagers take to the genre/lifestyle.

That said, if you're over twenty and a goth, then you have emotional issues.

I'm not what you would call goth...but I know goths who are self-centered and goths that aren't self-centered... in the same way thah I know punks that are self.centered and punks that aren't... in the way that I know people that work in an office that are self-centered and people that aren't.

Egocentrism is not a musical's genre characteristic. It's just an human condition characteristic!
