"Major Tom (Coming Home)" by Peter Schilling

(I'm guessing you mean this song and not David Bowie's "Space Oddity"?)

[/quote]I don't know if it is Major Tom that design_femme is asking about -- some of the lyrics quoted are way different from the lyrics in the song.

Major Tom (Coming Home) - Peter Schilling

Standing there alone
The ship is waiting
All systems are go
Are you sure?
Control is not convinced
But the computer
Has the evidence
"No need to abort"
The countdown starts

Watching in a trance
The crew is certain
Nothing left to chance
All is working
Trying to relax
Up in the capsule
"Send me up a drink"
Jokes Major Tom
The count goes on

CHORUS:
4...3...2...1...
Earth below us
Drifting falling
Floating weightless
Calling calling home...

Second stage is cut
We're now in orbit
Stabilizers up
Running perfect
Starting to collect
Requested data
What will it affect
When all is done
Thinks Major Tom

Back at ground control
There is a problem
Go to rockets full
Not responding
"Hello Major Tom
Are you receiving
Turn the thrusters on
We're standing by"
There's no reply

CHORUS

Across the stratosphere
A final message
"Give my wife my love"
Then nothing more

Far beneath the ship
The world is mourning
They don't realize
He's alive
No one understands
But Major Tom sees
Now the life commands
This is my home
I'm coming home

Earth below us
Drifting falling
Floating weightless
Coming home...

Earth below us
Drifting falling
Floating weightless
Coming home...

Earth below us
Drifting falling
Floating weightless
Coming coming home...
Home.....

The lyrics in question read more like "Space Oddity".

"This is Major Tom to Ground Control
I'm stepping through the door
And I'm floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today

For here
Am I sitting in a tin can
Far above the world
Planet Earth is blue
And there's nothing I can do

Though I'm past one hundred thousand miles
I'm feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go
Tell my wife I love her very much she knows"

ahhh, I forgot that one! Good call.

the orig. poster probably meant one of these forementioned songs, and perhaps confused one with the other (or at least confused time periods? The 80s thing threw me off.)

or maybe it's an obscure hit we never heard of?

"Why Me?" by Planet P follows a similar storyline to the other songs mentioned, but the quoted lyrics don't really match that one either.

I know the song and for years have wondered the same thing... who is the artist?

I vaguely remember a video, and if I'm not mistaken the artist was a bit of a Rod Stewart look-alike. The video had a bunch of tubes running all over, as if they were veins.

Some more of the lyrics following what you entered, if I remember correctly, are:

Listen commander,
Mission Control,
Break off the silence,
And break for my soul.

Tell my family I love them,
Don't forget to kiss the children.

Tell me why do I have to be the one.
It's higher and elusive (??) and hotter than the sun.
Ohhhh, I can't handle this at all.
I've got kinetic fever and I'm bouncing off the wall.

Nah, nah, nah, nahh.
Nah, nah, nah, nah, nahh.
Nah, nah, nah, nah,
Bouncing off the wall.

Nah, nah, nah, nahh.
Nah, nah, nah, nah, nahh.
Nah, nah, nah, nah,
Bouncing off the wall.

If anyone can figure this out I would like to know the artist as well.

YES!! I answered this on a separate entry (when the system was having problems): Matthew Wilder "Bouncin' Off The Walls" from 1984.
