The quote is inaccurate and that is not the only source that states that.
It's even refuted on Wikipedia and many other credible places.
His rant was more along mine in that this crap just hits Google and then multiplies.
They were words never uttered by Ben Franklin and that fact in not in dispute by credible historian or biographer of Ben Franklin.

Again, the page you list is not proof of that. Historians use primary literature for scholarship. The site you refer to does not have any such refernces. My point is that we have played multiple sides of the fence whenever it serves us, and that's left a trail of pissed off people around the world. We look the other way and allow terror when it serves us or doesn't have enough dollar value and get all riled up when it does. I'm just saying we could try to take the higher road, but I'm also not naive in thinking that's this isn't complicated and sometimes a matter of chosing between evils...although the choice is usually money ala the Shah, Marcos, Noriega, China. But hey, all the French, German and other weasles are doing it too, so it's hard not to play the game. It's just fucked up all around. Tough to see a solution.

We usually DO take the high road, especially when compared to most other countries.
How many countries have the Russians cut off for human rights violations?

When we take an aggressive stance, we are accused of meddling.
When we do the other extreme and walk away we are accused of ignoring human rights abuses for monetary gain.
When we do a top to bottom economic embargo we are then accused of starving children in some immoral Machiavellian plot.
Either way, countries or individuals that have ulterior motives in criticizing the US or thwarting our influence or actions have a built in means of righteous denunciation.
At the end of the day Iraq at that time was a Soviet client state while Iran was receiving their assistance from the Europeans and other ME countries, yet I rarely hear a word spoken about that.
