Dylan v. Costello – please help me explain it

OK, I was listening to an Elvis Costello compilation the other night and my wife just shrugs her shoulders and leaves the room. Go figure. She just can’t get his voice. Oh well, I guess it is an acquired taste. So I am then discussing this with a friend who says that it is like Bob Dylan. FWIW, I don’t think Dylan is anything like Costello but, why is it I can relax to Elvis but Bob does nothing for me?
