Personally i think that the (mainstream) New-Wave did come from the same roots that disco came from... I think it was a sort of an evolution in dance culture (after the Disco rage) and in the end comes down (and goes way back to) bands like Kraftwerk from Germany.
Only synths and beats, NO guitars (here in Europe that is, not talking 'bout the Usa New-Wave that emerged in the 80's, as that was a very different kinda music from the Euro New-Wave & Synth-Pop). And i think that synths & beats had and have nothing to do with Rock & MOR music whatsoever.
And if you think that New Wave went out and jumped onto the "guitar" based bands coming out of the UK... I don't Agree really. Here in Europe New-Wave (the synth side of New-Wave...as in Soft Cell, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Etc...) came from the the offsprings of Disco and the new technologies of the synthesizers in the 80's. I DO think that a part of that New-Wave went back to the Rock roots a lot more (more guitars, grunge, etc) but only because New-Wave was dying out by the mid 80's...

Well, there are different kinds of New Wave, aren't there? There's the Buzzcocks, Stranglers, and Ultravox! kind of "New Wave", which is more Punk and Rock-inspired and then there's the Depeche Mode and Ultravox kind of "New Wave," which is Synth-driven and can come off as Dance/Disco-inspired. To make matters - for better or worse - there's the New Romantic offshoot of New Wave, which is very Disco-beat inspired[:)]

I almost picked 1971-77 (Disco, Arena Rock, ugh!), but then I thought about all the great Prog Rock of the period that I love.
1995-2002 was dreadful. There's no avoiding it. Sure there were a couple cool groups, but most of what got radio play was pre-fab crap.

Today's music is much better than it was a few years ago, thank god. Hated disco--UNTIL rap came around.
Hated hair bands--UNTIL grunge came around.
Hated lame ass 80's bands like Air Supply-and still do-But not as much as I hate the boy band -teeny pop slut era.
The rap,grunge and pop of late 90's made me puke.
What was worse was when many of my alt stations I would listen to put things like Pearl Jam and Limp Biskit on their playlists!!!!!!!!!

In assessing this , I am looking at both commercial AND alternative stations, and to my dissapointment , many "alternative" stations went the way of Linkin Park, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, etc which made good music even more difficult to find.

..but some time in the late 80's commercial radio started to get swallowed up by corporartions who dumbed down the playlists. When this happened college radio was the way to go. Still is. Commercial radio, as a source for getting good new music, died around 1988. It suddenly became all about focus groups and endless repetition. Of course, there were always a few isolated exceptions here and there around the country.

Without a doubt, 1995 to the present. I am surprised that even the current younger generation seems to be drawn to music before their time. I have stopped caring about current music trends for the past ten years. I agree with the earlier post that you really have to look hard to find the good music.

I voted 86to94 as the worst.New wave as we know it was gone.With the likes of Whitney Houston,Mariah Carey,Elton John sapola and the coming of boy band crapola no freeking thanks.
