How ironic is it that Blir gets WLIR perfectly clear in Connecticut but we here on Long Island get nada, zilch, nothing?

Time Warner and Direct TV have all music stations that give enough New Wave to get by - TW (Channel 615) calls it Retrospective. I'm not sure what Direct TV (Channel 814) calls it. Not a lot of rare stuff, but the basics and a bit beyond...

Cablevision has an 80's New Wave type station that plays a halfway decent selection of oldies commercial free 24/7. You have to listen to it through your TV though which is'nt bad if you have it hooked up tp ypur stereo like I do. It's up in ther 800's where all the music stations are.

I have something called Retroactive on my cable - Time Warner. It's through Music Choice. I suspect it's the same everywhere. It's ok - relies a little too heavilly on late 80's though.

I listen to that all the time. I think the channel is 815. It is hooked up to my stereo so I can hear it outside as well as inside my house. (we have outdoor speakers) I like it a lot. Yesterday they played The Bollock Brothers Horror Movies. I do agree with WolverineSyr,as they do play a lot of late 80's. But you will hear some good stuff from time to time. Last week I heard B-Movie A letter from Afar.

Are all the Retro-Active channels the same? Because the problem I have with mine is that it's too dominated by the early '80s. Perhaps I should begin tuning in again after writing to complain to them about the late '70s-early '80s saturation. I have yet to hear a ton of my late '80s New Wave faves on Retro-Active such as the Woodentops, the Railway Children, Easterhouse, Underworld, Cellarful of Noise, the Close Lobsters, the Go-Betweens, the Wild Swans (later material -- I'm responsible for getting the only Wild Swans on that channel), the Lightning Seeds (how can you leave Ian Broudie off of a New Wave station?), the Sundays, the Primitives, etc. Stuff they played heavily on Manila's New Wave radio stations. Every time I turn on Retro-Active I hear the Greg Kihn Band, Taco, Falco's "Rock Me Amadeus," Wham! (shudder), or some other cringe-inducing mainstream pop tune. Although I applaud them for adding the Wild Swans, the Sound, and James.

I would love a saturation of late '70's early '80's!

Retro-Active where I'm at always plays Wham's "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" and "Everything She Wants." There's way too much '70s punk for my taste (I only like punk in limited doses), and the New York Dolls are hard to sit through. About 70% of the playlist is from the late '70s and early '80s so there's a nonstop barrage of "Just Can't Get Enough" cuts and cheesy MTV crossover fluff. Blech. I think Marshall Crenshaw and Phil Seymour are ok, but I wouldn't play them on a New Wave station. They sound so...normal. The Red Hot Chili Peppers do not belong on there. The Jesus & Mary Chain are barely heard. There's one Fra Lippo Lippi tune ("Shouldn't Have to Be Like That"), and no Adventures, Colourfield, Friends Again, March Violets, China Crisis, or Lotus Eaters. Aztec Camera is limited to two or three tracks yet the Wonder Stuff get their whole discography added. Goth is virtually ignored outside of the Sisters of Mercy and a Mission tune or two. Much of Retro-Active is punk, power pop, and synth-pop. I prefer jangle pop, Goth, and post-punk.

Another missing New Wave act on Retro-Active is Alphaville. What's up with that? How can you not play "Forever Young"? It's bizarre! They have Falco's "Rock Me Amadeus" on heavy rotation but Alphaville is too pop?

Coming from the perspective of liking 70's punk, cross-over stuff, Marshall Crenshaw, etc. I think they play way too much later stuff (like the Wonder Stuff and Red Hot Chilli Peppers.)

It's funny how perspectives differ on the same format.

Well, I'm not pleased with the bizarre oversaturation of the Wonder Stuff, either. I'm fine with "A Wish Away," and I've no idea why they're going deep into that eight-legged groove machine. The Red Hot Chili Peppers shouldn't be spun on there at all, but I guess you have to make aging KROQ fans happy. The late '80s material I'm talking about are artists like the Railway Children, the Close Lobsters, That Petrol Emotion, the Darling Buds, among many others. I'm listening to an XB-102 broadcast from the Philippines right now, and the Cocteau Twins' "Sugar Hiccup" is playing. That's what I'm talking about.

Nothing against Marshall Crenshaw or Phil Seymour, but that power pop is way too American-sounding. Once the Producers come on Retro-Active, I leap for the off button.
