I must confess to thinking of them immediately. Lots did. Even Keith Oberman on MSNBC mentioned "Let's go to Katrina and the Waves" when the hurricane was first coming onshore.

One of the local stations here in Nashville was playing "Walking on Sunshine" an awful lot just before Katrina hit New Orleans. We were supposed to get the aftermath here. 70 mph winds and 8 to 15 inches of rainfall. Thank God it didn't happen. We got a few gusts and 2 inches of rain instead.

I did. I think everyone my age (29) did who I spoke to. At least they all seem to mention it. Like "Boy Kimberly Rew never saw this coming" (Soft Boy/Katrina founder/guitarist) and crap like that. But it was just an easy term of reference.

Living north of the border, I have to admit that the song "New Orleans is Sinking" by Tragically Hip popped into my head. The Hip are probably the biggest Canuck band never to break the US. "New Orleans is Sinking" was huge in Canada in 1989 - you can look up the lyrics on any one of a hundred websites and if you can figure out what the hell the song is about you are smarter than me is.

Our local Disaster Response team flew down to help out in the rescue effort. The stories told on their return really drove home to me how horrific things are for so many people. I'm not a religious person, but my thoughts and prayers are with them.
