Looking at it from a Top 40 success viewpoint:
I might throw Culture Club into 1983. It seemed no matter where you went there they were, and they had a few singles chart highly & get a lot of play on Mtv.
I think Cyndi Lauper might qualify for 1984.
The Police had a great run from 79 to 82, but after Every Breath You Take, they weren't making such a huge impact as they once did.
One thing that always bothered me is that looking at the US charts, the casual observer would think New Wave was full of one or two hit wonders - Human League, Pretenders, Soft Cell, Depeche Mode, Joan Jett, Berlin, Motels, etc. - which WE know is not the case!
I think Blondie, Duran, U2, Police were definitely the exceptions with some consistant chart success.
