Not sure if this is good news, especially after you read what the channels will be...and especially since it doesn't specify a channel that will be anything like the vintage WLIR. Strange.

So whether this is good or bad, I'll let you decide.

WLIR Lives With FM Channel Casting
There have been plenty of rumors circulating recently about WLIR and the fate of its sister stations 98.5 The Bone and Party 105. Good news is that WLIR was able to find a home across three new channels with a re-launch at WLIR.com on the internet. (Sounds kind of like WOXY, huh?) The stations will be commercial free, subscription free, and jock free. The cool part is that The Morey Organization, Inc. (TMO and Long Island’s largest privately owned media company) will be launching the next generation of radio, called FM Channel Casting. This format rivals internet, satellite and traditional FM/AM broadcasting.

John Caracciolo, President of TMO said, “Radio has survived all technological advances throughout the last 50 years including the development of television, 8 tracks, cassettes and CDs. But the advent of satellite radio has presented the industry with a bigger challenge than ever before and we as broadcasters cannot put our heads in the sand and pretend that it won’t affect our medium. We cannot stop technology. We must live with it, grow with it and keep competitive with it. TMO’s foundation was built on FM radio and it is our passion for the medium that has forced us to give it an overhaul. Through the technology of FM Channel Casting, I truly believe that TMO has revolutionized the industry and saved terrestrial radio. We are confident that FM Channel Casting is the wave of the future for stations throughout the country.”

The initial launch of FM Channel Casting will start with TMO’s three Long Island stations. It will be programmed by PD Harlan Friedman, each station offers the listener a specific choice of music style: Long Island Rock / FM Channel 98 (98.5 FM), Party Hits / FM Channel 105 (105.3 FM) and NeoBreeze / FM Channel 107 (107.1 FM). In the future the company plans on bringing FM Channel Casting across the country.

Is it a variation of 'Podcasting' via the internet?

"FM Channel Casting" is merely a term TMO invented (and plans to market) for this new format -- No jocks, no commercials, no interruptions.

The plan is allow advertisers to "buy" an hour on the air and in return get 3-4 mentions throughout that hour. Apparently an advertiser will be able to do the whole transaction through a special website. Anyone can be an "advertiser" -- you can send a birthday greeting 4 times an hour if you pay the fee.

The idea is, low cost to advertisers, less clutter on the air. And without an airstaff, a production staff, a promotion staff or a sales staff, there's practically no overhead. TMO sees this as a very profitable scheme.
