The first album is brilliant and so haunting! "lovely head" is just a beautiful song with an instrument that no one uses nowaday, I don't know the name of the instrument. Her style after that is too clubby for me, still good but doesn't compared to Felt Mountain.

Felt Mountain does indeed stand alone. I think I know exaclty what you mean by that instrument. In reality I think it's just a vocoding microphone that they eventually blend into synths. Best example is on Pilots where you don't really know when her voice, which can itself reach unreal peaks, blends into the vocoder and then the synth to really draw out and finish the sound. It's freakin amazing though.

And her publicity photos just slay me as well. I can't freakin wait for her tour:

Oh, i just spoke to a friend of mine and it said that the credits on Felt Mountain simplified this instrument to just "synthesiser" but since my friend's really good with recognizing obscure instruments from songs he said that if the synthesizer was used, then it was definitely used to imitate the Theremin sound, an instrument invented by Russian George Theremin. That's interesting stuff.

Oh that is freakin cool guyinsf. And relistening to Lovely Head, that's definatley different from the sound I was thinking about in Pilots. It does sound like it could have been a synth hooked up to a vocoder rather than voice, just like Frampton used a guitar for that now classic solo from Frampton Live (dating myself yet again). But I'll buy "theremin"...WAY nifty.

I know, way cool and i have to listen to Pilots to hear the difference. I don't know if they even make the theremin anymore, whatever it is.

Thanks for the Theremin link Blir. I guess my friend gave me the wrong first name of the guy, but he was dead on on all other info. I checked the band list and found out some other notable artists who have used this instrument beside Goldfrapp, like garbage and gary numan...interesting uh?

I've not heard "Strict Machine" before, but the bass line is a straight rip off of the song "Spirit in the Sky"

I'm gonna add a very belated edit to this thread. I realized from the concert the other night that most of those "Lovely Head" sounds are NOT the Theremin but Alison herself going OFF on a vocoder mic hooked up to some seriously spacey synth sounds. The Theremin does indeed start off the very first part of the song but the long trippy sounds after her 1st and 2nd versus are her! Holy Crap, that was a trip!!!

PS. I'm eating my words that Ooh La La is a warmed over Strict Machine. [:I] I guess it just really takes a long time for albums to sink in with me. [?]

PPS. Hmmm...I don't take it ALL back. Thinking about it more, there's some tracks on here that are a bit too polished and designed to be hits rather than the contrarian 'tude that I expect from Alison. Yeah, they sound great on first listen, but they don't last as long as Felt Mountain. But I forgive her! [:o)]
