Where / when did punk end and new wave begin?

Was it when Billy Idol left Generation X and went solo? Was it in August of 1981 with the birth of MTV? Was it right at the last note from the Sex Pistols San Fransisco concert? Hmmm.....

IMO, it certainly isn't tied to defection by Billy Idol, he was tame compared to what was happening in the punk scene, Gen X, even Celsea and the precursors Empire, were lame (not musically at all!!) in the punk sense, I even thought the Sex Pistols, for

Grunch, 90% of the list of bands you cite were not around at the same time as the Pistols, they came a few years later. Comparing Minor Threat to the Pistols in a historical sence is not viable.

I do realize those bands weren;t around with the pistols, that was partly my point, just emphasizing punk did not end with Idol, it never really was Idol. It continued well after his solo run from Gen X, and well after the pistols. I only brought up the p

Did'nt they just exist simultaneously? A lot of what was happening in New Wave circa 1982-84 sounded like it came from David Bowie's "Low" album (1976?) and you could trace punk back to the 60's really.

I don't think punk died as early as 1981. There really was a second wave of punk after 1977. Both (most notably) British (Exploited, Vice Squad, Anti-Pasti, etc.) and American (Minor Threat, DI, Adolescents, DK's. etc.) In fact, I think 1981 was a peak ye
