80's movie soundtrack changes

OK, has this happened to anyone else? you start watching one of the classic 80's movies that you haven't seen in quite some time and you notice that the background songs seem different from when you had seen it the first time in the 80's?? It happened to me the other day with 16 Candles...I hadn't seen it in about 12 years and it came on basic TV the other day and when I was watching, it occured to me that something was amiss....I couldn't put my finger on it at first, it was something very suttle. Then it hit me, some of the music changed, or at least, I think it did. Am I right or am I just suffering from early onset dementia?? If I am right, does anyone have an explanation as to why this happens? If I'm wrong, feel free to razz on me all you want, I won't remember by tomorrow anyway!

This happens often. It's due to getting broadcast and/or home video clearances for certain songs. Back in the 80's, the future of broadcast mediums (internet, Video-On-Demand, etc.) and home video distributions (DVD...) wasn't entirely forecast so the rights to use some songs was very limited. This forced many distributors to strip out certain songs before being rebroadcast or sold.

Today, new legal concepts are in effect, so most contemporary movies won't have this problem.

I have the original dvd release of 16 Candles with the altered soundtrack. I thought it was my imagination that the songs were different. That version went out of print for a few years and recently the original version with the original soundtrack was released a couple of years ago.

Quite often pictures are edited to allow for a different time format on television. Producers sometimes take this opportunity to include deleted scenes or allow for expanded scenes. As if television commercials did'nt already hinder the pacing of a film, the inclusion of different scenes shakes ones viewing experience even further. Me, I'm a DVD guy.

This is actually one of the main reasons that Miami Vice hasn't come out on DVD yet but so many other TV shows have. Miami Vice had a TON of popular music in its soundtrack and they haven't been able to get all the owners of the music to give their release.

Another example is Fast Times At Ridgemont High. The most noticeable difference is the absence of the end title version of Goodbye Goodbye by Oingo Boingo in one version. It really messes with your head man. Its very common on TV shows-- one of my favorite skits on SNL was the Schlitz Gay beer commercial. Originally it featured Beautiful Girls by Van Halen which was then replaced by a lame guitar piece...both versions are still out there.

My vhs copy of sixteen candles has comepletely different music,not my DVD though.It irritates me that theres a great song in that movie thats not listed cuz it was probably not a real released song....A nightmare on elm st. 3 had a Dokken guitar solo that was amazing growing up,listed it as "After The Fire" but wasnt...Now my new DVD replaced that gutar solo with after the fire....I wish the solo was a full song so I could find it...and they wouldnt have changed anything

The producers of WKRP In Cincinnati fought tooth and nail to re-license the songs for the DVD release, which is why it took so long to come out.

Square Pegs is having the same problem.

I remember there being licensing issues with the release of the Heavy Metal soundtrack for ages. I think its available now, but for most of the 80's you couldn't find a copy.

And the whole issue of the Valley Girl soundtrack is a story in itself.

The producers lost, as there are many songs that have been replaced. As much as I want to buy the set, I won't until the original music is included.

And still with a ton of music substitutions...

Even nowadays, when they have the option of licensing the music for the broadcast airings and the home video release at the same time, they still run into trouble when it's time for the DVD release. Most of the time, it's that the company doesn't want to shell out the asking fee. It's less common with films than it is with shows -- they don't seem to be as cheap with films. Or maybe it's just because they have to clear more songs for a one-season box set.
