Great NW Songs with the Same Names?

Postby Frau_Blucher » Fri Sep 30, 2005 6:57 am

We're not talking about covers but distinct songs that just happen to have the same names? Which are the best or your favorites? I guess it's kinda like asking which father-son combo had the most hits in baseball or something...not really significant except out of curiosity in the anomaly. Some of mine, starting with 2 songs that are done by 4 bands each:

A Girl Like You by 20/20, Smithereens, Edwyn Collins, and The Wolfgang Press. I'm pretty sure each is distinct.
Ambition by Subway Sect, Dalek I Love You, Robert Marlow, and Graduate.

I started going blind just going thru the "A's" but I can't say any of these are the best. There must be some killer songs that fit this description. Others?

Absolute Beginners by Bowie and The Jam
Again by Tuxedomoon then by Lenny Kravitz much later on
All Fall Down by Ultravox and B-Movie
All I Want was probably done best by Toad the Wet Sprocket but can't forget Echo & the Bunnymen and a girl punk one by Snatch.
All I Want Is You by U2 and Roxy Music
All the Way by New Order and a pretty track by Ladytron just this year
American Music by Violent Femmes and The Blasters

*whew* ok, I need a break. Great topic Blir but just a little tedious, lol! I'll be back with more. There are lots of same titles between artists but I have alot outside of New Wave so I did'nt bother to include them. I did deviate slightly in my list but they could all be considered alternative in it's fairly broad accepted meaning.

Okay, I think we've primed the idea well enough. Now let's try to get to "best" rather than a complete list of all songs that have the same name. So far I'm liking your "Dissapointed" and my "Absolute Beginners". I'm sure there's gonna be some abosulte killer one where we go "Doh! Of course!!!"

Great topic, Blir
Haven't had time to sit down and think this through, but the one song that comes to me immediately:
Temptation: Heaven 17 and New Order

I'll dwell on this....

...not to mention Patti Smith and (aheh) Them.

Appropos of those, do check out Art Brut's "Good Weekend", which includes a naughty parody of the "she's coming down my street..." bit from the Them version...)

"First we went to the cinema...
Then we came back from the cinema...
We went through the front door...
Up the stairs...
Through my bedroom door...
ONTO my bedroom floor...

...I've seen her naked twice!
I've seen her NAKED...TWICE!!"

(Love that song...)

Hmmm... Does this really count? After all, they're not exactly two "distinct" songs...Moby sampled Tones On Tail.
