Name That Tune: Signature KROQ Classics!

I forgot to thank Blir for the quiz... and for making me feel like I actually know stuff.

Foggy memories and D'oh moments notwithstanding, I think the easiest ones -- at least for me -- were the clips that included a distinct guitar or synth riff that sold the song and made it instantly recognizable. The Plimsouls, Alice Cooper, English Beat, X, Josie Cotton, 3-D and 20/20 tracks had that. Some of the ones at the beginning didn't. I see I was apparently only one of two people to get the last one right, and maybe that's because I'm a Harry Nilsson geek, but that one included a whole line of the song! I can't speak for everyone, but I personally am a helluva lot better at IDing clips that include singing than clips that include a drumbeat.

Also, I think everyone has 5 or 10 favorite tracks from all but their most cherished new wave artists, and they tend to just remember those and forget everything else. The Buzzcocks, Adam Ant and OMD songs were not those 5 or 10 for me. If I expanded the lists to 50 or 100, I don't even think they'd be there. And I'll probably get flamed, but I've never heard Killing Joke's first three albums. Other than "Love Like Blood" and "Eighties," I was admittedly never much of a fan of them to begin with. But the world would be a boring place if we all liked the same songs, right?

I definately know what you're saying SS. But remember that these weren't necessarily my favorites either - just some quirky signature songs that KROQ used to play in their heyday. I wouldn't be surprised if you weren't a little young for some of these classic pieces...but of course now that's a good thing for you, ya young bastard! [:D]

Yeah, well, I'd like to pick a bone with the DJ who chose OMD's "Georgia" over the, you know, three UK Top 5 hits on the same album. And they better have played the whole "Whomp That Sucker" record. "I Married a Martian" over "Funny Face" and "Tips for Teens?" Puhleeze!

Young? Oh, well, I thank you for that, too. The only one of these songs that was "before my time" was the Modern Folk Quartet one... and not even, since it didn't technically get released until the '90s. But that's what I love about the NWO. Where else can a guy like me be considered young? I should've come out of hiding a lot sooner -- you guys do wonders for my self-esteem!

I can honestly say that I have never heard any of the songs from this game on the radio. I did know a few songs and should have recognized a couple more that I actually have in my collection, but these are all post-80s discoveries on my part.

Something tells me I will fare little better on the WLIR game, but I guess somebody has to come in last. [;)]

When I was listening to KROQ I felt so smug because I knew I was going to be the cool old man who listened to the same music as the kids.

...and then along came rap...

Suddenly I've become Walter Matthau, "what the hell is this crap? You call that music?!"

I hate this stuff and I can't relate to teenagers anymore. All I want is for people to stay off of my lawn. Boy it went fast. I used to be a spry young buck kicking my heels up and knocking antlers with the other bucks.
