I'm a big 80's R&B fan as well, so the lines get a little blurred for me. I also thought of Cameo (a personal favorite of mine), but another band that came to mind was much more obscure, but also much more New Wave. Does anyone here remember "Eat Your Heart Out" by Xavion?

I'm not too sure about Appolonia 6, but Vanity 6's songs Make Up & Drive Me Wild definitely has a new wave influence. Prince who produced & basically did the music for both groups new wave influnced songs include:

Ready For The World's "Oh Sheila", anything from Klymaxx. And how could you forget ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING from PRINCE!?!? Vanity 6, Apollonia 6, The Family and even the master himself. Controversy and Dirty Mind are New Wave all the way. Later...

The Untouchables also were great. I saw them live and they had the whole auditorium dancing. I think they may be in the ska genre along with Fishbone. They were played a lot on KROQ in the new wave era.

Anything that Kashif had anything to do with used synths and drum machines more than quite a bit. After a while, it all tended to sound the same.

*"Nunk" stood for "New Wave Funk," so I reckon that's about as good an example as any.

Funkedelic - "(Not just) Knee deep" the Long version, has a killer guitar solo.

Brides of Funkenstein - " Never buy Texas from a cowboy", has killer guitar work too. Both have new wave influence.

Killer doesn't beigin to describe it - I've never been a big fan of guitar solos - but that one blows me away! I also liked the guitar section of Movieland's A Postcard from New York. (Calling it a guitar solo seems weird for adance song...)[:D]

Definitely Grace Jones - transitioned from disco to über-new wave glamazon very well. Hmmm...also, The Untouchables fit in very well. Also, many of the earlier rap and hip-hop acts borrowed a bit from new wave, check out how many of the earlier acts sampled Kraftwerk:

Of course,Village People in''Renaissance''.Cheesy Devo like tunes,''punk''spirit(God!!)and new romantic clothing.Don't know, whose idea was this kitsch extravaganza,but its a lot of fun.Make the same wrong with me,and listen to it!

Rick James used to call his music "Punk Funk." Take that as you will... I think it had more to do with promoting himself as something different than the other 70's funk groups - although most of them were pretty edgy...

No mention of Rockwell? "Somebody's Watching Me" was quite New Wave. He had another single(one i could not find), called "obscene phone caller". I wonder if his entire album consists of harassment topics.

I didn't mention him because the original poster asked for black bands. Rockwell had a third single that charted, "He's a Cobra." It was pretty forgettable, but it did prove he could write about other things.

Of course, there was also "Peeping Tom"...
