History Snapshot: Matt Pinfield At WRSU-FM, 1982

Folks,

Bless Radio Shack for making reel-to-reel tapes that could record three hours per side, and held their magnetism pretty well...

While finally going through old tapes (five years after the last move - guess we're staying) I stumbled across a tape I'd made of the audio from old Saturday Night Live shows in 1978. At least that's how it was labeled.

Turns out it's actually six hours (three per side) of airchecks from April 2, 1982 at my old college station, WRSU-FM at Rutgers. One side is from early in the day, featuring former music director Steve Maffei, but the other is Matt Pinfield, playing the stuff that was popular at the Melody Bar (where he was DJ three nights a week throught the 80's.)

Your next question is "So what'd he play?" The following listing shouldn't disappoint...it's a recreation, of course (music logs were handwritten back then, if they were done at all.)

He continued DJing at the Melody Bar through the early half of the 90's. Last time I saw him was when he excitedly accosted me and some friends of mine after a Killers concert(NYC)because we were all adorned with "old-school" band T-shirts.

I wasn't sure precisely when he'd stopped, but it makes sense that it ended around the time he went from FM106.3 to MTV. He's at Sony/BMG now, VP of A&R for Columbia Records.

(1995 was during my days 'in the wilderness', e.g. forsaking everything music-related to build a family and an actual career. Now I've got that, and my daughters have gotten old enough to ask "what are these big round flat black things you have so many of?", I've got *juuuuust* enough free time to spend a bit of it on music...)
