Same here. I usually prefer to check out reviews before I grab newly-released CD's from either new or old acts. It helps not to make you waste your money on crap you can't listen to after 1 round.

Ok, I just heard this cd. It's really good. Enough modern touches to keep them sounding relevant but with enough of the classic sound to keep the older fans and those who only like their wimpier stuff happy. There are some excellent short bursts of guitar feedback in a couple of the songs that really work. This is easily their best album since Violator. I have it on the hub now for anyone who wants to check it out.

I've had my copy for a few weeks and I love it as well. It gets a little mellow towards the end, but the first half of the record absolutely kicks ass, particularly "John The Revelator."

I fail to see how this album is a "crushing disappointment". On another board I'm a member of it is getting rave reviews by the general population. Good stuff and sounds awesome cranked up.

Well, I'm happy for you and them. I own all of Depeche Mode's albums, and it doesn't stack up for me. I remember when hardcore fans were thrashing Echo & the Bunnymen's "Evergreen" album, and I couldn't understand why. The opposite has happened here. I do think "Precious" is a solid single, and I mentioned so in my review.

God forbid that somebody should post reviews of upcoming New Wave albums to create some sort of in-depth discussion. Perhaps make this board password protected for those who have been formally baptized or given Master's Degrees in New Wave by the so-called experts of the field.

OK, first off: there's no such thing as an expert. Music appreciation is highly subjective. But I can say that there are enough folks here who can speak intelligently about it. And I don't think that anyone here is so narcissistic as to think that their opinion is better than another and ought to be forced upon others. SO, that being said, I'll throw my opinion in the mix too.

Depeche are keeping true to form with their usual themes of blissful relationship and self analysis through the lenses of pain, suffering, sin, redemption, confession, etc. The lyrics follow this same order. The music is a marvelous step in a new direction which is refreshing to this old time fan. And Martin is rocking his guitar (is it still the Les Paul?) on just about every song here, if not every song. Nice. The last two albums, though they did contain some lovely gems, fell sort of flat for me. I think old time fans will be happy (or happier) with this one. I'm picking up on the same soulful and rock influences that have been apparent on other albums. Again, nice. Honestly, I'm feeling just about every song on this album. Song for song, I have'nt felt this way since Songs Of Faith And Devotion. And from a technical POV, Martin's and Dave's vocals just get better as they age and become more experienced no matter what album. I defintely see Touring the Angel being a knock out tour. This is a solid album and will endure the test of time.

Major standouts for me are:
A Pain That I'm Used To
Join The Revelator
Suffer Well
Lillian
And of course, the anthemic Precious which I think is akin to Enjoy the Silence.
