I like to think of it as one huge story-arc ranging from stalker-ish songs like "Something To Do," "If You Want," "Stories Of Old," and "Somebody" right up to full-blown love songs, such as "Black Celebration," "Stripped," "A Question Of Lust," "World Full Of Nothing," ending in "But Not Tonight."

Definetely "What's Your Name" for song and the first LP for albums. Violator did not nearly as much for me as it did for all the people who bought the album thinking it was cool to listen to Depeche Mode in '91. Been there, done that.

I'm going to buck the trend here and pick a later album. While I do really like their earlier material, Songs of Faith and Devotion gets my vote. My favorite song is One Caress. I love the whole feel of that album and especially that song.

I agree Abacab. I think the SOFAD period was Depeche Mode's Golden Age, the pinnacle of their career. It's easily one of the most important albums of the nineties and certainly an achivement beyond anything they had ever done before both in it's artistic merit and it's commercial success. SOFAD was HUUUGE.

It was also the last album done with Alan Wilder who was a production MASTER hence the great, large, grand almost ominous feel to it's sound. Think Never Let Me Down Again from Muic For The Masses or Halo from Violator (both maginificent albums as well - will never downplay them at all).

But this was the end of a period that began with Black Celebration where the albums became extermely focused in terms of theme, cohesion and subject matter. They toured the hell out of SOFAD and between that and interpersonal forces among band members and their personal lives, the group was pretty much torn apart. Alan announced his resignation with a hint of bitterness and spite shortly after the tour. I actually met them a few times during this tour and it was apparent that something was not right. Alan seemed distant, Dave was locked up in a room (as was much publicized) getting stoned. I have to say, Andy and Martin are two of the nicest guys I ever met in music.

It's said that great art comes from great suffering. I'm almost certain that was the case here with SOFAD and the magnificent, magnificent shows that came out of the Devotional Tour.

I agree with XXX.
Some Great Reward and Black Celebration are their best. I think I must have worn the grooves off both of those records. I listened to them constantly!
