Mastering the art of making mp3s off a vinyl album is a talent that seems to have eluded me up until now.

Also, I believe I lack the equipment to do it.

But the person who runs this website has a sample clip of "Desperation" and another track I don't like (and surely would blow if it were to appear on a quiz)...

ONLY number 20 is unanswered. Thanks to those who've played thus far, but after the initial influx of players, submissions have skidded to a halt. I guess KROQ garnered more loyalty and enthusiasm???

My philosophy is, if I have it, how rare can it be?

I'd think the singles would be rarer (or at least harder to find), since they were indie. The album was major label. Plus, at least four people have it lying around in the eBay stores right now.

Okay, we got a couple more in, and the average keeps going up, now to a ridiculously impressive [b]65!!![/b]. One Lawn Guylander has snagged the lead from another Lawn Guylander and yet another Lawn Guylander has zoomed in to match the high score. Unbefreakinglievable!

All songs have been answered too! Dudes! Thanks to those who've played thus far, but we still don't have half the players of the KROQ quiz. I look forward to seeing more answers. Cheers.

It constitutes most of what I listen to. But some of this stuff borders on ridiculous. I just don't really see the point in exalting the mega-mega-mega-MEGA-obscure stuff that only people in a certain location *might* have heard at one point.

Ridiculous to who? The average is 65 amongst a dozen people!! How "ridiculous" is that exactly?

Now, I do take your point somewhat. I totally against those obscurities that you and your college roomate heard but no one else in the universe. That's just and obnoxious elistist tool. Most of those types of songs sucked - it's why they're so rare to begin with.

But you don't find that in these Name That Tunes, no way. Plus this is not your average Name That Tune...it's a very specialized local one, like the KROQ one, that's designed to not only exemplify what was played on these stations but to illustrate some regional differences. Early NTTs had very common songs but very short snippets...truly like the old TV NTTs. But you can only do so many before butting up to some rare songs.

Yes, I understand. Like I said, sorry to be a party pooper. I realize this is an EXTREMELY specialized test.

I just don't like the implication that I don't really know new wave if I don't know these mega-obscure songs. Perhaps I'm just reading too much into it.

I live in SoCal and I run across a lot of KROQ elitists who think that their underground version of the '80s is how it really went, and that anybody who didn't listen to KROQ is an uneducated, mainstream dolt, so I've just grown really weary of that kind of mindset.

It's the same problem I have with baby boomers, really. The "you HAD to be there!!!" thing.
