Finding good music you haven't heard before

How do you do it? I know there's good stuff out there I haven't heard, both old and new, but how do I find it? For many years of my life the radio was a great source. Then MTV. I used to have friends with similar tastes. We'd update each other and make cassette recordings of each other's records.

Now I pretty much can't stand to listen to the radio. It's not just the music. My tolerance for commercials and inane DJ chit-chat has fallen to zero. If I did listen devotedly I might hear a song I hadnt' heard before but like maybe once a month. Why do that when I have a great CD & mp3 collection?

My old friends are much less interested in music than they used to be and my new ones don't share my tastes.

The "Song of the Week" here on NWO and similar places is great for getting exposed to old stuff that I missed back in the day, but even those sources are hit and miss.

Some of the threads here on "what do you like that's new" have been helpful. I never would have found the Epoxies or a few other good bands/songs otherwise.

I think the problem is that I'm busier and less forgiving now. Less willing and able to wade through the muck to find the gems. I think most here would agree that muck/gem ratio has gone way up in the last 20 years.

The internet helps somewhat, but I'm still not satified. Shouldn't technology enable me do sift what's out there efficiently?

I know there's good stuff is out there. How do I find it?

I think internet radio is the way to go. I'm fortunate enough to be able to listen to KCRW here in Southern California -- their 'Morning Becomes Eclectic', 'Metropolis' and 'Nocturna' programs always make for great listening. Check them out online sometim

I write for a newspaper and for awhile I helped write a CD column called "On That Note." So I get a lot of freebies in work.

I've discovered a lot of amazing music through my job that I would have never heard of otherwise.

I mentioned LaunchCast previously, sure it looks a little commerical (but give it a chance). I too hate listening to stuff I hate (does that make sense?) So the skipping feature is good, plus the banning feature is really good. You can ban artists and/or

I also subscribe to Harp magazine.
If I read a positive review and like the music sample or mp3, I might actually buy the CD.
