And General Boy, you'll be surprised how many you don't think you know, but you really do. And when you find out that you knew one that you thought you didn't? Well, then you can enjoy the satisfaction of rushing over to your record library, pulling it off the shelf... and frisbeeing it right into a brick wall.

I just sent in my answers, and I'll be lucky if I get 44 points. I will say my rememberances of WLIR tunes is more on par with Waukena's than 2Nu's. Of course, there are songs that are familiar that I couldn't guess who did it or what the title is (# 14), and some I can't wait to see what they are (# 23). Sorry to bring down the average, folks, but not having access to WLIR from 1983-1997 hurt somewhat.

And just to throw in my two cents, these games aren't about who knows more new wave than others. We all like the stuff, and I'll be the first to admit that there's a lot of new wave out there that I've never heard of before coming to this place (these games are evidence of that). And even if I do know the tune, it doesn't mean I'll know who did it or what it's title is. I think it's exciting that I get to be turned onto new songs (to me, anyway) of a genre that has come and gone, and these games are a fun way of seeing what I know as opposed to what I don't. In Blir's own words, listen to more new wave! There certainly is enough still out there to be discovered.

And it had some really fine performances and a broad distribution of scores, as we would expect from a local contest like this. First, I gotta say that this and the KROQ game really made me realize how regionalized New Wave must have been back then. I guess I always sorta knew that, but this brought it home. And it really makes sense too - if this indeed was a golden age in music where fans and DJs played what they wanted to and new music innovation was at its peak, of course local music would have been much more dinstinct than today's homogenized mush. Very interesting!

Now on to the truly [b]AMAZING[/b] scores. Final average was a [b]59[/b], which was totally skewed by results like these:

Thanks for the game, all of you who were involved putting it together! I eagerly await Fritz's next one. What's really interesting in this game as well are those percentages. The lesser known songs seem not to be that obscure, and the songs with higher percentages never got past 83%! Really varied percentages overall, and intriguing to see where my scores stand against my fellow new wavers. Well done!

Unnamed but famous former LIR DJs? I call foul! But seriously, congrats to Rewind, abacab, BigBri and "MS" and "MX." Those scores are amazing. Did you know if you combine my score on the WLIR NTT with my score on the KROQ NTT, you'd get... well, a crappy score.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that the highest-charting single was one of the ones with the lowest recognition factor. I watched The Other Ones' music video three times yesterday in hopes it would sink in. Today, I've already forgotten how it goes. But, you know, it's funny that one of the guys in that band looks like a blonde Pete Shelley. Because I keep blowing all of Pete Shelley's songs. Coincidence? I think not.

Hope some better supersleuths than myself were able to take advantage of somebodyelsesomewhere tipping their hand...

Blir's not kidding about New Wave being regional. I have only heard 2 of those songs on the radio, <I>ever[/i]. I knew a few more songs that I "discovered" since the 80s, but the majority I have never heard before in my life. [:I]

Agreed on the regional nature - even my old station, 60 miles or so from WLIR, managed to miss quite a few of them; others, like the Mental As Anything, Shelley and Kershaw songs, weren't played much at all (in favor of Pop Will Eat Itself and The Wonder Stuff, pretty much.)

Actually, I think it's better that things were so regionalized, because...

1.) Every station had its own character...

2.) ...and looking on twenty-odd years hence, there's a possibility of my finding a song or two that I *never* heard before, and might love.

So I suppose there's hope in my (environmentally-bred) ignorance...
