New Wave records by Non-New Wavers...

Styx did a couple of songs that are decidedly New Wave sounding:
"Too Much Time on My Hands"
"Mr Roboto" both jump to mind.

Some have argued that the Cars are not new wave (I disagree) but listening to "It's all I Can Do" is definately in the "new wave vein" as are most of the songs on "Candy O".

Rush's "New World Man" is very new wavish.

ELO did some late stuff that I would consider new wave:
"Here is the News" pop's up in my mind (I could forward it to anyone interested).


Agree? Disagree? I'd like to hear everyone's view.

In retrospect The Cars may not seem New Wave compared to what people now consider as such. But back in 1979 there wasn't very much on the radio that sounded like them. With the corny hand-clapping and harmonies they definitely sounded like a throw back to an earlier time which is what New Wave was all about- getting away from arena rock.

For those of us who remember hearing them when they first appeared there was nothing else like it. They made listening to music fun again which it hadn't been for a looooong time.

Try and imagine what it must have been like to young kids who were getting sick of Led Zepplin, Styx and Journey to hear some of these bands on the radio.

I agree with you Randall.

I love the Cars and you're right, they were very fresh sounding. I am a firm believer that they are solidly within the new wave genre. I enjoyed Devo for the very same reason. Very fresh and different sounding.

Another new wave song from a generally non-new wave band:

"Turn in On Again" by Genesis.

Was Genesis new wave? rock? pop? In their solo undertakings I'd classify Peter Gabriel solidly in new wave but Phil Collins as pop.

Well said Randall - I absolutely agree & never understood why if a band found sucess outside the genre, they were no longer considered new wave.

Believe me, hearing the Cars and even Cheap Trick next to Led Zep, the Stones, Kansas & Styx was a true breath of fresh air.

I always wondered where people felt Cheap Trick fell - I can't really plug them into any particular genre - which is probably a good thing.

Wikipedia labels Cheap Trick as a power pop band, and Genesis as a British progressive rock band.

I have very fond memories of Cheap Trick. They bridged the gap between the hard rock and new wave people which meant I had something to talk about with everyone at school that I knew. Live At Budokan was and is one of the best live albums around.

Back in the day I saw them New Years Eve at the Forum.

Speaking of Devo and fresh I remember when they appeared on Saturday Night Live back in 1979. The next Monday at school everyone couldn't stop talking about them.

That's the thing I miss- eveytime you heard a song or saw a group perform it was like nothing you had ever seen. It seemed like your mind was getting blown every week.

Cheap Trick was only considerd more new wave in our crowd. Of course that probably had more to do with the band's look than their music.

I'm glad to hear that - I thought I was the only one who thought of them as new wave. Of course, I always throw power pop into new wave, much to the chagrin of some![;)]

Robin Zander and Tom Petersson definitely looked very MOR Rock but that was offset by Bun E. Carlos and Rick Nielsen.
I always loved when a band had a couple of members who looked like they didn't belong or who just stood out in a big way. Those two guys fit the bill in that regard.

Tubes were also a strange case of an uncategorized band, that jumbed into new wave mob.Their first three albums were serious efforts of experimental pop rock with a hint of glam ,and its really true they were in fact ridiculing all this craze about punk rock.A similar case were the Good Rats, but with a more straight arena rock mood.
