Manekineko, I listened to your Broken Glass disc all through the long weekend. Very nice mix of old and new bands most of which I never heard of. Pretty edgy, raw - a couple of them reminded me of the Pixies. But I'm listening to Papercuts right now and holy CRAP is this an AWESOME disc! EASILY one of the BEST ones I ever recieved from the Exchange! I'm very impressed. Very happy with this disc. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Next up: Buffalochipz's Popgasm and Canadiana [8D]

manekineko, I LOVE the papercuts cd! What a great mix of songs. It is the kind of cd that makes you want to have a couple of cocktails and relax while listening to it. Thanks so much.
I haven't gotten to the other cd yet, but am looking forward to playing it soon.

Randy, I just listened to No Rhyme No Reason #5 and #6. Just like versions 1-4 before them, they're fabulous! Blank Generation is a fave--nice to finally have that song. Ditto Working Girl. I also love the songs by Positive Noise, CCCP, Sylvain Sylvain, B-Movie, Rational Youth, Camouflage, and The Rattlecats. Well done, Randy! Thanks!

Good News:
Wolfe Man Mix 6 - Great mix! It seems each Wolfe Man disc is better than the last. My early favorites include Little Tom by Johnny Hickman and Bordeaux by The Shapes. Also, after the tragic devastation in New Orleans it is especially nice to hear some good ol' Cajun Zydeco.

Manekineko - Two more CDs of sonic and visual excellence. "Papercuts" is an instant classic! - a superlative, synergistic cohesion of mood and music.

Bad News, at least for me:
My burner is borked, which I interpret as a sign to suspend my participation in the NWO CD-R Exchange. Scratch me from your mailing lists, I shall not receive if I cannot give.

In summation:
It has been about one year since the NWO CD-R exchange began. In that year I have received 69 diskloads of fantastic music from 24 of the finest people I have never met (wait, I met Red x Red and Scramjet for lunch once). These 69 disks are now the most prized part of my relatively modest CD collection; if my house catches fire I'll be crawling thru smoke-filled rooms to retrieve these irreplaceable compilations.
It is interesting that of the 1,819 individual songs (including my contributions) there were only 20 instances of duplication. The music itself ranges from the sublime (Moodswings - State Of Independence) to the ridiculous (The Fools - Psycho Chicken), with styles far-flung from standard eighties new wave - from punk to zydeco to movie soundtrack scores.
The exchange experience has greatly broadened my appreciation and knowledge of this music of our common interest. Only a handful of the 1,819 songs were previously known to me. Of those few with which I was familiar, there are some "forgotten favorites" which I was especially glad to rediscover after so many years. These include:

Just a few more thoughts:
I tried to put together some good music to send out, but I think my approach was to just throw together several of my favorite songs, burn 'em and ship 'em. I didn't have the aesthetic insight to create a mix of music which flowed together cohesively. The following disks are more than just collections of songs; the "whole" of each of these compilations exceeds the "sum of the parts":

Finally, most all the disks which I received are very appealing visually. The ranks of the exchange participants include some very talented design people. Bowiestation, MarvyMarv, Manekineko and Ekahob, I.M.He and Devildog all created memorably stylish CD's. My favorite, however, is Design Femmes [neither backward nor sideways} double CD. It's just cool, and the design art extends to the CDs themselves.

Well it's after midnite and I got hoopball at 0530, so sayanara, dipshits! [:D]

I'd like to jump into the fray if you guys would take another trader! I have a cool dance cd that is a little dark, a little stupid (well, pretty stupid in spots,) and at least good for cleaning the house to. Email me if you'd like a copy!

I also have a kick-ass christmas cd - not any new wave, but a lot of swing & cocktail styled stuff.

Thanks Egg and Marie, it's totally my pleasure! Volunteering at the radio station has it's perks... By the way, has anyone heard the new Franz Ferdinand album yet? It's GREAT!!!! But, back on topic now...

I am going to be putting together a disc featuring the best of the Split Enz and related bands (Crowded House, Tim and Neil Finn solo, Phil Judd, etc.) Would anyone be interested in that? I have some really good rarities, like solo singles from the Split Enz' keyboardist, as well as the drummer (can't think of thier names at the moment). If interested let me know and I'll get right on it!

[Otters Walk Among Us]

Although I've been around much lately, I've continued to enjoy everyone's CDs, and was pleased to receive Med's latest. It truly is amazing how much there is out there to learn and relearn.

Unfortunately, we have to move, so all my vinyl and a good chunk of my CDs are packed away, but by the end of November, I should be able make some new mixes and rejoin the fray. I'd like to be ambitious and prepare "otters presents..." mixes for every year since 1964, but I don't think I'll be able to send everyone 41 CDs. Although I could just make the mixes and put them on the hub. Yeah, that's the ticket.

Anyone that is interested in trades with non-NWO folks or just seeing other mixes should check out artofthemix.com. I've posted a few mixes over there (same user name) and been involved in a few great trades.

Wolfe-man--Another excellent mix! You never hesitate to combine different types of music, and do it successfully, to make a mix that is uniquely your own. Who else would have thought to combine cajun and zydeco music, folky blues, and ELO (I laughed at your boldness!) with the modern stuff?! You've had a lot of practice juxtaposing different types of music--on your show. (By the way, I noticed you played a couple songs from Papercuts on your show Monday. [:D])I love the songs by The Dandy Warhols, New Pornographers, Birthday Massacre, Oranger, and Shapes. (And you know how much I love zydeco.)

Buffalochipz: Wow! I'm amazed by the treasures on your Chipz Mixes II, III, and IV. Thank you! So many great songs that I've never heard before. These songs are my new favorites: by Virgin Prunes, Yum Yum, My Mine, Garcons, Big In Japan, Scarlet Fantastic, M83, Boxcar, Brunettes, Pitty Sing, and Colourbox.
Wonderwall is HILARIOUS!!! I wonder how many Oasis fans know that it's a cover of a 60's pop song.

I love your Radiosongs mix--I love theme compilations. You've included both the well known and never-heard-em-before songs to make a mix that is both familiar and unexpected. Well done! Thanks, Buffalochipz, for starting this music exchange! I can't believe how much my exposure and taste in music have grown as a result.

By the way, what is this Popgasm and Canadiana that I've read about? Does a person have to have a Y chromosome to get them? [:)]

Thanks, Egg! Don't worry about not being able contribute CDs to the exchange. I'll still send you mine! For me, it's not about an even one-for-one exchange. It's more of a "pay it forward" kind of thing. And thanks for putting all of the compilations on the hub, where everyone can enjoy them.
