ABC trivia question! Need Help!

Postby Spaz » Fri Sep 03, 2004 2:34 pm

OK, new wave and ABC fans...I've got a question that you may be able to help me with....

"When Smokey Sings" was released as a single & promo video from the album Alphabet City. On the single/video, there is a part sung by Martin Fry that is NOT on the album version (something about "I Need YOu So Bad", or "I Want you So bad", and some other words). Unfortunately, every compilation by ABC that has that song features the LP version and NOT the single version. Am I going crazy? Does this version just not exist? Was I hearing things?

If you know what I'm talking about, please let me know if there are any ABC CDs with the single version on it. Or at least just let me know if you remember hearing the song with that little bit on it...

I am listening to my "CD MaxiSingle", NTCD111, that I bought when the song was originally released.
At about 2:55 that phrase kicks in.

In contrast, as you have said, on "ABC The Ultimate Collection", a 3 CD comp, that phrase is definitely not there.

Is it Martin Fry singing that line, or did they sample Smokey Robinson?? Man, you have a little treasure on your hands I guess.

Any chance of getting an mp3 of that version of "When Smokey Sings"?
I'll send you a track of your choice (if I've got it, of course).
