I'd really like to know how most of you got into the music that you like at the present...if there was soemone that gave you what we could define as musical education.
In my case, there wasn't a physical person that taught me and got me into the stuff I like but there's a radio station that is responsible for getting me started into the music I like: FM Aspen 102.3. They are a station dedicated to classic songs of the 70s, 80s and 90s. I think I've started listening to Aspen cause I felt more attracted to music sang in English than to the stuff in Spanish that other radios put on. So.... exactly without having the idea of what New Wave was, there was just a lot of stuff that I liked (and still do) that Aspen included in their playlists. For axample, I spend years as a child fascinated by a song that I never could hear in any other place than Aspen and that was sang by someone with an incredible voice and a great drummer.. that song is Cities In Dust. By age 15, I was really educated and ready to move on into stuff that Aspen wouldn't put on like Joy Division or Bauhaus. But I owe them my education and it's still one of my fav radios. This month their dediacting their Aspen Review (a series of programmes dedicated to an artist's career) to INXS. I think that's great... they are passing knowledge to new and also to older generations.

In a nutshell, Ira Robbins of Trouser Press. I had discovered Devo on SNL but no station around my location would dare play anything that "weird".

I then stumbled upon Elvis Costello when I went to buy "Going for the One" by Yes. But when I found a copy of Trouser Press...that was it. Wall of Voodoo, Oingo Boingo, Ralph Records...you name it. I followed TP for 3-4 years collecting all issues and buying just about everything TP recommended. Jon Young, Mick Farren....these guys weighed into the equation too.

Trouser Press shaped my musical way of thinking.

3: 2 different radio shows on a local Minneapolis radio station in 1982; "Ready Steady Go" (not to be confused with the BBC show), and "Radio One". Both played punk, new wave, imports, and weird stuff.

and honorable mention to first really *listening* to "Nevermind The Bollocks" in 1984.

I'd have to say Bfflogrrl really helped me out back in the early 80's. While I was only hearing the hits & still didn't have Mtv, she managed to turn me on to Echo, Depeche Mode, Yaz, Trio, the Smiths, The The, etc. None of those groups were getting played on our crappy AOR stations. I know those were popular groups for most of you - but not for us in the vast wasteland of REO Spudwagon & Styx.

Once I got cable, Night Flight was a huge influence, as was New Wave Theatre and another video show, which I can't remember the name of (maybe Rockworld?)

I also read Trouser Press and Creem.

Good call on "Urgh" that too was a great influence on me as well. You have to go back to 1979-1980 KSAN from time to time inbetween the likes like Quarnerflash, Tom Petty, Led Zep, Fleet Mac, also played cool tunes or is it cool toons anyway the likes like The Clash, The Ramones, Blondie, The Police, The Cars, Elvis Costello and the Gary Nuwman one hit wonder. Also old SNL had Elvis Costello and the B52s. Also on late night TV I believe on NBC also Twiggy's Jukebox which played bands that at that time i had no clue on like The Jam and The Vibrators and The Buzzcocks. Then the New Wave thing really Kicked off late 82 early 83 when KTVU channel 2 started to play MV3 also around that time the radio station KQAK The Quake FM99 kicked off and lasted about 2 1/2 to 3 years until mid 1985 and they played the best New Wave ever even better then KROQ just ask Jed the Fish he used to be a Quake DJ.

Ahhh that good ole dayzzzz Shows at the Mab, On Broadway, The Stone, Berkeley Sqaure and the I-Beam, Dancing at Echo Beach and Stargaze and all the cool New Wave Parties drinking booooozee and smoking cloves....

BTW: Speeking of Urgh: What ever happen to the band "Invisible Sex"???

i should have posted some links about john peel!...

the guy was a total dude though as he helped LOADS of bands (who otherwise more than likely wouldnt be on the music scene) get their first airplay. he played a LOT of music that otherwise would never have even got airtime.

I was at a bit of an advantage. During the late 1970's and early 1980's, I worked in commercial radio as a DJ. Even though I worked for a country station and then at an Album rock station that became Adult-Contemporary, I still had plenty of accessibility to New Wave, punk, and obscurities thanks to the record companies sending us all of their latest releases every week.

I used to listen to all of the albums whether I heard of the act or not. The Program Directors would ask me if I wanted the unknown ones before they'd toss them into the circular file. That's how I built my collection so quickly.

But as for individuals as mentors I can think of two names.

1. Fred Wilbur, the proprietor and owner of Buch Spieler Music in Montpelier, Vermont. In the 70's he introduced me to acts such as Eno, the Talking Heads, Kate Bush, and Stiff label artists. He also routinely stocked imports from JEM.

2. Mike Thurston, my college broadcasting teacher and the producer of a weekly syndicated radio show called "Off the Beaten Track," which aired primarily on college radio stations. Mike had a personal goal to collect everything ever released on the Harvest label. That rubbed off on me. Plus he got me into Gary Numan, the Buggles, Sniff 'N the Tears, and the Motels (before they became popular).

And most of my music interests blossomed from reading the liner notes to see who was playing...and then going out to look for their albums.

My mom, who is a huge country music fan, got me into New Wave, strangely enough. For some reason, she brought home Culture Club's "Karma Chameleon" record one day. I listened to it and was hooked. I started looking for everything CC, which led me to a magazine that was called Smash Hits or Star Hits or something like that. Whatever magazine it was, I'd read about other bands and then I'd go out and buy their records.

My other influence was a tv show. I also stayed up all night on Friday and Saturday nights watching "Night Tracks" on TBS. (We didn't get MTV until 1991, and by then it already had started to suck). NT played a lot of mainstream New Wave videos.
