24 Hour Party People

I like movies better when I know absolutley nothing about them beforehand. I had heard the title of this film but had no idea what the subject matter was. What a pleasant surprise! It tells the story of Manchester-based Factory Records and the Hacienda nightclub, concentrating mainly on two bands--Joy Division and the Happy Mondays--and the labelhead Tony Wilson. I couldn't care less about Happy Mondays, they never really caught on in the States but that didn't distract from the excellence of this movie. The best scene comes early when the Sex Pistols (using actual footage) play a 1976 show in Manchester which results in many of the 40-some people who showed up forming their own bands (Buzzcocks, Mick Hucknall/Frantic Elevators etc) The movie also has a nice self-referential touch. The guy who plays Tony Wilson talks to the camera about the movie itself and once declared that a missing scene didn't make the final cut but will probably be on the DVD. Ha! There's also a bunch of musician cameos including Mark E. Smith from the Fall and the guy from the Stone Roses.
Surely this was mentioned on this board when it first came out.....sorry for bringing it up again, I just discovered it!

I'm assuming everyone knows of the upcoming movie about Ian Curtis based on Deborah Curtis' novel "Touching From a Distance?" It's tentatively going to star Jude law as Ian Curtis. Hmmm let's see, Jude Law is 32 and Ian died at age 23. Yeah.....

I'm a gigantic New Order fan and waited over a year for this film to be released. I actually went to the opening night showing of 24 Hour Party People in New York and got a limited edition tee that was only meant to be worn by the staff that opening night

I actually think Elijah Wood would make a little more sense appearance wise. Plus he was born in 1981 so that makes him 23.....

Actually, seeing him in that picture, I think he would make a good Ian. We'd have to get a good performance out of him though. Every time I see him I think of LOTR so he'd have to be pretty believable to get me to forget that typecast role.
