Anyone intrested in the brief "New Jazz" movement

No one really talks about the small movement in england with groups like Carmel, Weekend, Ludus, early Everything but the Girl and Style Council etc...
Anyone interested? and does anyone have any recomendations of groups in this genre?

Um. what about what the new jazz movement turned into, what some people now call sophisti-pop

Some of it sort of easy listening; Matt Bianco and Basia. Swing out Sister, Sade

but also some fantastic things like the Blue Nile, Prefab Sprout, Scritti Polliti, some Style Council,

Also Haircut 100 and maybe early ABC could be part of the New Jazz movement

LOL, now that I know what you're talking about, yeah, I like it! Or at least I like what it turned into - all those followup bands you mentioned like Matt Bianco, Blue Nile, etc. I think my first exposure was in retrospect from EBTG's very early "Night and Day" cover off the Post Punk Diary CD.

So question - who were the big names from the actual initial movement itself, besides the bands you mentioned?


PS. Also listening to Tuxedomoon's "Night and Day" from 1981...has NOTHING to do with New Jazz. [;)]

There's a song that's played often in those smooth Jazz stations called "She Rides"... it is so fuckin sweet[8D] There's a couple of more, but I don't know the titles. I know Paul Hardcastle is a prominent figure in these circles. Remember him[:)]

The last new jazz movement I kinda got into was the whole Acid-Jazz thing. Brand New Heavies, US3, Gangstar and so on....To me it was just 70s fusion fusing into 90s trip-hop jazz sound...

I have to say that Carmel's "The Drum is Everything" is one of my favorite records.
It's where Carmel's barely contained, amazing voice collides with jazz and post-punk.

Rolling Stone gave it the worst review in the day, God, there are such assholes that work there. If it wasn't Bruce Springsteen or REM in the eighties, they hated it.

I digress...

No it's not really jazz, just jazz/latin/bossa nova-influenced post-punk stuff.

After the success of 'Rockit', Al di Meola also tried to go pop with 'Sequencer' but it flopped [V]

Yeah I was really into most of that stuff. Working Week too.

Must admit I didn't really care for Carmels album either. For me she just had one of those voices that is OK for one or two songs but when listening to the album by the time I got to the end of side one her voice was getting on my nerves. More More More is a great song though.
