MSK,
Regarding the dearth of "thank you" messages, it occurs to me that people who participate in an activity whose legality is at best questionable might not be inclined to post a note along with their logged IP address and a timestamp showing a moment during which they were assigned that IP address, proving (perhaps to a jury of their peers) that they engaged in exactly that questionable activity.
This doesn't mean it's not appreciated - just that you should probably use the popularity of your downloads as the gauge of that appreciation, rather than the explicit thanks of the folks who probably really do appreciate it, but are justifiably shy about speaking up.
I can't speak for those folks, mind you - all my music has been gotten through proper channels, my being in radio and all, and frankly, the RIAA should be building a wing of their headquarters named after me because they'd be able to build it with all the money they've sucked out of me over the past 30 years - but I suspect that's the way they'd feel.
