Funny you mention vigilante stuff. A guy 2 weeks ago looked up a bunch of convicted pervs on the internet. Then he found them and killed them. Unfortunatly when caught he killed himself. I think he is a hero. OK, for those against death, why the hell can't a civilized country pass laws to keep these guys in jail? They all admit they will do it again. I know its the rebel in me but I do dream of a day when the regular citizen gets so fed up that they decide to stop taking it and change the world. If that starts with an ass wooping so be it. I would have no problem doing time to protect my kids.

We're really picky about what we let our youngest two kids watch. With our 14-year-old, we're not as strict--in fact, he pretty much watches everything we do. But, he's old enough to discuss things with. One thing that we do that we get shit for is not allowing TVs and computers in the kids' rooms. They get a certain amount of time each day for both, and it's all in the "family" room so Mr. BMG and I can keep an eye on things.

They just think their own little circle of friends reads their stuff. I don't know about MySpace being "creepy". It all depends on the "creepy" people using it. While MySpace DID start out as a forum for teens to get in touch with each other, it has since morphed into a music-centric site. A lot of bands forego getting a website altogether and just use MySpace and most, if not all, of the DJ's on Sirius use it (which is why I'm there). It's an excellent resource for bands (up and coming and those with fading glory). I mean, is Thomas Dolby a creep because he's on MySpace? Blancmange? Matthew Sweet?
I agree it's easier for pedophiles to get their twisted jollies on MySpace than Yahoo!GeoCities or AOLHometown (which MySpace closely models itself after) but, as with most anything, parents need to teach their kids to not be so fucking stupid and we need to throw the book at pedophiles.

ghosty, I agree that there are a lot of bands and music on myspace and a lot of people use it solely for that purpose but to act like that's it's main purpose because that's YOUR main purpose is a little short-sighted. It would be my guess that you don't have any teenagers now and the comment "parents should teach their kids to not be so fucking stupid" is naive. If it were only so simple. We all did things that were stupid when we were young and the opportunities that are out there now for teenagers is so much greater. My Space isn't creepy for you because you only use it for the bands. Millions of teenagers aren't necessarily creepy because they use it either. But there are creeps on there, just like yahoo and the others and if you actually saw any of these specials, I think your opinion might change.

True...but then what's the solution? Not allow teenagers to go online at all? Make everything online 18 and up? That would'nt bother me because I'm not a teen but maybe MySpace should make it more difficult to get on. I sympathise with you but really...no one has come up with a solution for this.
Now that MySpace has been purchased by Rupert Murdoch (Yep, it's owned by Fox) I'll bet it becomes more and more music-centric ....mainly for the purpose of "sell sell sell". MySpace even has it's own record label now (crappy music such as it is).

The Dateline expose just brings out into the open what has always gone on, unfortunate as it is.

I have to admit to watching it for the entertainment factor. The look of utter shock on these perverts faces when they get busted and realize they will be exposed on national TV is priceless.

Most disheartening is the fact that getting caught is never the end of the story. Their sickness is hard, if not impossible, to remedy. Busted or not, they almost always do it AGAIN and many become chronic repeat offenders.

And the kids they molest may be prone to becoming molesters when they grow up and the cycle repeats.

I don't know philly. You're right that far more people support tougher sentencing. Maybe it has to do with it's a psychological diagnoses and it's also a crime & how the system handles that? Maybe it has to do with pleading down your class of offense & little kids who are unable to testify?

I think some of it has to do with us not understanding what an offender can do and can't do once they're released. It also has to do with probabtion/parole officers and social workers not keeping up with registered offenders.

It has to do with the idea that they are somehow treatable - although it's never been proven that a child molester can be treated & modify their behavior.

Whatever it is - it needs to be thrown out.
