I went with the Yearbook and Journalism kids to San Francisco to the National Journalism Convention last week, hence my absence lately.
What a fantastic city and trip!
The trip went amazing. The kids were so good, and we were blessed with fantastic weather the whole time! (the weather had predicted rain, but it didn't arrive). Blue skies almost the entire time. 2 of the kids had never flown in an airplane before, and 2 of the kids had never seen the Ocean before. We walked all over that crazy city! Chinatown, Telegraph Hill, Nob Hill, Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman's Wharf, and Alcatraz. And we took Bus # 38 to the end of the line, to the Pacific Ocean, on what turned out to be the best afternoon. We had a great time at the beach, running around with the kids all afternoon.
We had Yeabook/ Journalism sessions each morning, but our afternoons were free, so that is why we got to explore.
Our last day, Sunday, we went to Alcatraz. We even had the funky little headphones for an audio tour, which I HIGHLY recommend. After Alcatraz, we talked the kids into eating some seafood at the Fisherman's Wharf. Now, let me tell you, the kids were great, but when it came to eating, they always wanted to eat pizza or burgers. Despite the plethora of funky ethnic restaurants we 3 teachers wanted to check out, we couldn't quite convince them to join along. But we made them eat authentic SF seafood at Fisherman's Wharf! Which they ended up liking.
And of course, I miss the Pacific myself, so it was awesome for me just to see it again.
a couple pix to share:
Al Capone's Alcatraz prison cell:

this is a few of us jumping off a wallbreak into the sand. It was like landing on a cloud. I like the effect of the pic, with our hair flying and the shadows behind us:

And a nice view of the Pacific. Sea lions on the beach below; hard to see, though:
