Looking for a good copy of "Traction" by Ampersand

Postby eponymous » Tue May 02, 2006 7:58 am

Please, please, please... does anyone have a good copy (MP3, AAC, whatever) of "Traction" by Ampersand? I used to have a copy on vinyl and a copy from vinyl to cassette but lost both years ago... Does anyone have it?

Thanks!

I don't know if it's a "good" copy, but here's a link to a copy nonetheless.

Nobody could ape Depeche Mode to a "T" better than Ampersand. Well, except for maybe Camouflage. I liked the B-side, "Blacklight," better, though. "Blacklight, it shines for them. Blacklight, it blinds from far away. Blacklight, it keeps you in and out of touch. Lights black or red." Or something like that.

"Blacklight" is awesome (anyone have that one? ;), but "Traction" has always moved me... I admit to being let down that Ampersand never went farther than they did, though I do enjoy Tom's later efforts such as his cover of "Linus and Lucy" (complete with Traction-like metallic samples) and "Give Me More". Hmmmm... now I want to search for my vinyl of "Linus and Lucy" and figure out how to get a decent MP3 of that... without actually owning a turntable anymore...

I hadn't actually even thought of "Traction" in years until recently when I decided to put together a compilation CD of stuff I used to play at Halloween parties back in the 80s... "Traction" was always a personal and house favorite...

I have it in my hands right now. Does that count? I recently picked up a stereo jack, but haven't gotten the turntable hooked up to the computer yet. I'm gettin' there...

Was the 12" the only thing they released? Because I've never seen anything else for sale.

I am not expert on Ampersand by any stretch, but I believe that one 12" from Pow Wow was their only release... I know "Traction" has landed on at least one compilation CD. I don't think "Blacklight" ever did. Post-Ampersand one "member", Tom Davis, released a 12" with either two or three Ampersand-esque versions of Vince Guaraldi's "Linus and Lucy" as Tom Bennett Davis (or perhaps Thomas Bennett Davis). I think that was Pow Wow as well... not sure... my vinyl of it is about 600 miles away from me at the moment. I'll try to remember to check that out this weekend. Later still Tom started or co-started Trip Records and has put out a couple of things on that label as "Boffo Santana-Jones". That stuff is pretty much nothing like Ampersonad however.

EDIT: "Linus and Lucy" was actually released as "Schroeder" (though I believe there was a note that Schroeder is Tom Bennett Davis). It was on Pow Wow and I believe it was PW 429

I'd like to hear "Blacklight" as I liked Traction very much.
If anybody has it...

I don't have a copy of "Blacklight" but I did come across a cassette tape I made of my "Linus and Lucy" 12" when it was fairly pristine. As soon as I can get my hands on a cassette player and get some fairly good MP3s off of it I will post them...

Oh, don't hold your breath on this please, it could take me some time as I am trying to close out a project this month.
