I drove a 1983 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. OK, no gweedo joke please.....[:p]

I got it at the tail end of the 80's, second hand. Mine was in brown with a yellow/orange pinstripe going down the side. It was pretty utilitarian - no power windows, seats, locks - nothing. It slowly started to break down and the upkeep was getting insane. Plus I banged it up a few times. I was glad to get rid of it but every now and then when I see one on the road - in mint condition too, sometimes - I get a little nostalgic.

but the one in this picture looks cooler than mine did. It had the good old 3-on-the-tree gear shift on the stearing column.

Later I had a 1978 Mustang:

Oh yeah, the dude magnet. White Volare with a dark green interior. Died at every stoplight. Yeah, baby.

What was that sitcom? I think it was called "Grounded for Life". I only saw it a couple times but every episode I saw he talked about how his first car was a Plymouth Volare. And I thought I was the only one.

My best friend used to sing that damn song (You know the one--the one stuck in your head now) every time she got in my car. That used to annoy the shit out of me. Don't tell her I said that.

This was what I was sporting in 1989. I had to rebuild the whole driveline, and installed a 327 engine. Yep, it impressed the girls.

This is what I'm sporting today. It was a mess when I got it, and after extensive work (over 2 years effort) it's almost show worthy. NOTHING beats the '55 Bel Airs.

I didn't know you were a gearhead, Hutter. Those Bel Airs rock! There's a guy that works with me that drives one of those. He even made the cover of Car Restoration magazine or something like that. He's been asking me out for 5 years. But he creeps me out the way he's 40 and lives with his parents still. There are other reasons he creeps me out what am I blubbering about?

God, I'd love to drive it again. It had some type of hydraulic shocks that I could pump up with air from the trunk. Great stereo in it too. I called her Lynn. Don't ask.

My first car was a '79 Ford Mustang Hatchback, white with tan interior. It was pretty nice. Power steering, power breaks, am/fm stereo, a/c...a nifty little map light.

Unfortunately, I totalled it around '81 or '82 and started driving my husband's '72 VW Super Beetle, with a Hertz shift, and no a/c. I loved that Bug but the no a/c thing just sucked.

Moving along, we got a used little 1987 Nissan Stanza. Great car.

A 1967 Chevy Bel Air that really was owned by a little old lady who never drove it anywhere but church on Sundays. I owned it between 1981 and 1984.

Mine looked a little better than this, but not much. Drove real well though, once I learned to put a quart of oil in every thousand miles.

Some of the shows I drove to see in it: Big Country's US debut, R.E.M.'s Thanksgiving show in NYC, 1982. Talking Heads at Saratoga Performing Arts Center (Stop Making Sense tour), The English Beat and <a href="http://tabletalk.salon.com/webx?13@@.2cb9c65c/41" target="_blank">The Bangles</a> at Geneva, NY (I have it listed in that post as Auburn, NY, but I'm wrong), and U2 on the War Tour at the Cayuga County Community College gym in Auburn, NY.

You guys all had sweet rides. I think I was still riding my Huffy bike back in the 80s. My first car was my grandma's '69 Le Mans (same color as pic, but in much worse shape). My parents took it away within the first week because I got it stuck in the mud one night, out in the middle of nowhere, while parking with my girlfriend.

No...freakin'...way!!! I got a hand-me-down 164E as well. Got it at about 100,000 miles and finally killed it at about 250,000 miles as several road trips to Vegas, Mammoth Mtn, Tiguana, all OVER the freakin place! Mine was burgundy.
