Let's Play: New Wave or Not New Wave?!!!!

New Wave/Punk music, culture, genres, memories. '80s revivalism and other relevant topics.

Dire Straits.... not New Wave but surely different ot what was going on musically when they came out.
Red Hot Chilli Peppers..... not New Wave. Seems sometimes as if New Wave is a label to all stuff that is not easy to define.

I'd say RHCP: funkish rcck with touches of punk

With all due respect to StormyPetrel, this is a silly thread. Music is subjective.

My two cents is this: if you think it falls in the category of new wave, then it probably does. New Wave is just about the only music genre that incorperates styles ranging from disco to rock to reggae to funk to bubble gum to R&B to country to traditional folk music.

I never, ever considered Prince New Wave. Just because he used synths and drum machines means nothing. He was Top 40 Pop. For that matter, what about Shades of Love, the Cover Girls, Noel, Monet, Shannon hundreds and more who used electronic instruments? These were all club/dance acts that emerged in the eighties and were feratured heavily on NYC stations like Hot 97 - really big with the black and Hispanic crowds. Try telling them they're listening to New Wave, lol [:D]

What about Cyndi Lauper or Pat Benatar? I say not.

Cyndi Lauper - ooh, that's a tough one. I say no--she was one of those artists who capitalized on the NW sound for much of her first album. On the other hand, "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" is THE party NW anthem...bubbly, silly, cute, danceable...but then again, that's a narrow paramter. That is not to say that all NW was like that. And good points have been brought up that just b/c an artist took some elements of NW, doesn't mean that they're NW. It's so broad.

I'd say yes to Cyndi Lauper's first album, After that no. I think she used the genre to break in - obviously the new wave crowd would be more accepting of an orange haired, weird girl than other segments of the music world.

Who would have thought that she'd gain such wide appeal?

Pat Benatar - not at all. She's always been an AOR act to me. I think she was needed in that genre, as most of the women singing or playing rock were on the punk/new wave side. Pat offered something new beyond Heart, Stevie Nicks, etc.

I think it's pretty safe to say that an artist's mainstream popularity hurts it New Wave credibility. What do you guys think?

Did Nirvana stop being grunge once they became huge? Of couse not!

Did MC Hammer stop being a rapper when he got huge? Of course not! (For the record, I didn't say he was a "good" rapper.)

Jeez, why hold it against someone when they become popular? Unless they suck, we should be happy for them and be glad that a New Wave band is kicking the usual dreck down the charts.

I think marvymarv is citing the accepted interchangability with which people used the terms "alternative" and New Wave.

New Wave always had an underdog status in the US. So it was often labelled as "alternative."

By definition, when an artist gains mainstream popularity, it ceases to be "alternative."

Mechi considers Red Hot Chili Peppers "funkish rock with touches of punk." I would submit that Duran Duran could fit that description as well (I know you're joking, XXX).

Prince is a unique figure in 1980s music. The man could incoporate New Wave, Synthpop, Funk, R&B, Rap, Glam Rock and a variety of other styles all in on record. While by no means exclusively New Wave, he was the untimate crossover artist of the time.

See, now to me, Bananarama are so not New Wave. I think of them as little more than an earlier version of the Spice Girls.

No

What? Are we talking about the same Billy Idol who was a member of the Bromley Contingent, a devoted band of Sex Pistols fans? Are we talking about the same Billy Idol that fronted Generation X?
