Disco Funk (HEY WOLVIE! I NEED A FIX!)

Postby hutter » Thu May 04, 2006 12:56 pm

Okay, it's not new wave, but I need a fix, and hopefully wolvie will throw up some of his kick ass rarities. I'll start with the Brothers Johnson's "Light Up The Night".

Great picks, guys. I had no idea Carl Carlton was the original cat who recorded that song (shame on me) and that version of Car Wash makes the original sound like ca ca. Yeah, raser, "Salty Balls" is definitely a classic. [:D] But "America, F#@$ Yeah!" is even better!

Hutter, you crack me up - I'm always happy to post this stuff, if people don't mind.

Carl Carlton is not the original artist - someone else did it back in 1967. I had a huge argument with a co-worker over it. I was sure that Carl was the original artist too - it killed me to admit she was right!

So, disco funk...here is my favorite disco funk group - Stargard. Most girl groups fall into the "nice & sweet category." Stargard absolutely were not that. They always struck me as the type of girls who spent all their money on new underpants, cigarettes, fake nails & cocaine. It's a shame they're barely remembered in either disco or funk circles, considering how much they put out & how popular they were in the late 70's & early 80's.

Here's Running From the Law (1979), which details the complexities of harboring intergalactic criminals.

High on the boogie (1980ish):

Lastly, some of you may remember a David Morales track a few years back called Needing U 2. I sometimes saw it credited to a group called "The Face". The best part of that song was the piano sample - an incredible hook. Here's the original song it was sampled from:
Rare Pleasure - Let Me Down Easy (1977)

Slave - "Just a Touch of Love"

Also dug "Watching You," "Steal Your Heart" and "Stepping Out." And let's all hear it for Chocolate Salty Balls (put 'em in your mouth)!

Ditto on the "Slave" appreciation. They were hit or miss, but when they hit, it was great stuff. Bring on more funky stuff!

Here's "Firecracker" by Mass Production, which got a second life as the music for The Two Live Crew's "Me So Horny".

Here's a some more:

South Shore Commission - Free Man (1975.) People assumed it was a duet between 2 guys. It's not, their female singer had an awfully deep voice & it sounds like they slowed her vocal down...strange...
http://download.yousendit.com/4BBCC5167C95FC9A

When someone samples an old song, I really like to hear the original. I'm always suprised at how much has been lifted from the old stuff.

Girl Next Door's "Salsoul Nugget" sampled Double Exposure's Every Man (1975) - here's the awesome original:
http://download.yousendit.com/1AA17DAE176DFDD6

You all remember S-Express from S-Express? Here's one part of it -
Crystal Grass - Crystal World (1974)
http://download.yousendit.com/308488DE1E37D3C2

And here's the other part - Rose Royce - Is It Love That You're After (1978)
http://download.yousendit.com/B847481520C9BD54

Does that give you enough of a fix?

Here are a few choice nuggets from the 80's

<a href="http://www.yourfilelink.com/get.php?fid=97865" target="blank">Booker T - Don't Stop Your Love (12'')</a>

<a href="http://www.yourfilelink.com/get.php?fid=97869" target="blank">Denroy Morgan - I'll Do Anything For You</a>

<a href="http://www.yourfilelink.com/get.php?fid=97890" target="blank">Imagination - Changes (Larry Levan Ext.)</a>

Cheers![;)]

All right. i think I need to keep my contributions small at first...and kind of test the waters here.

I am the UNDISPUTABLE master of all things funky....so lets start with this.

A smooth watery disco tune by a man by the name of Lee Ritenour.
http://download.yousendit.com/7A95960A4ABE3EB6

Next...
This song...
If I could have sex with a song...this one would be my one and only.
The ultimate funk/synth/disco/tron-like tune-
The one song that cries out "Im going to MAKE YOU MY BITCH"

The lusy, the beautiful....
Kano - I Need Love (Extended)

http://download.yousendit.com/3597B31423FEC3AE

Next comes this little gem that came into my love-life lately. A remix....
*holds for gasps*
for readers of my disco/funk blogging, you know I hate remixes in general, but this......is love.

Dont let the initial monotony get to you please...just keep listening...give it a chance. She's so good to you- just give her a chance.... I did

http://download.yousendit.com/C03334F449FEF3FD

Now heres one from a well known disco/funk god. Chances are you have this song....I post this for those of you who arent quite experianced enough in the world of disco to know of the godliness that is Giorgio Moroder.
I so wish I could be this man.

http://download.yousendit.com/B5A470340F3D2C45

And how can you say no to this song?
I wanna Rock You....
by giorgio moroder-

there are some sexy lyrics in here-
I wont post them, but I will post a few-

"let me show you a night-
let me make you feel right-
all night long."

OK, if thats not your style
Im flooring the pedal and pushing the bpm slider up a bit.
We're also flying to Europe.
Techically euro-house...it still retains enough disco-funkyness to qualify for this thread.

http://download.yousendit.com/E7FE78BD5501CB91

And....NEXT?
Were coming back to America...keeping the BPMs...and going into straight funk. Fueled by the heat of pure technology and a few late 80s cliches......it still nails the title 'ultimate funk-ness' in my book (as of this week anyway).

http://download.yousendit.com/1CEF827074826C32

Now the last thing you want me to do...is make an italo post.

If theres enough feedback provided, I will post some of this crap in other languages.
Including the rocking funk-ness

Paula Koivuniemi - Sata Kesaa, Tuhat Yota

(This isnt an attention ploy...but for some reason my BPS rate is falling dramatically all of the sudden and I dont want to post unless somebodys gonna think its cool)

I bought this on 45 when it was first released, what an odd choice for a pre-teen. But I love(d) it.

Yarbrough & Peoples - Don't Stop the Music (Original 12inch Version)

http://download.yousendit.com/D62E279867AEDB27

I think I was I was in Jr. High when this came out & I just remembered I have this 45 too.

Rick James - Super Freak (Original 12inch Version)

http://download.yousendit.com/981486F604C76BB0

These are both CD rips!

Frayo, through a strange twist in my history, I spent a couple years in Finland, so post the Finnish Funk. I, at least, am dying to hear the Paula Koivuniemi.
