no, we didn't have the time.
We ate at Pier 39, and some had that clam chowder out a sourdough bread bowl. Frickin' tasty ! ooh, heavenly....

Sounds cool. Next time here if you want really good eats try going over to North Beach on Culubus between Bay and Broadway. Places like Calzones and The Stinking Rose are great resteraunts.

I've been meaning to reply to this thread for a while... Angie, looks like you had a fabulous trip! I love the picture of you guys flying into the sand. How exciting that must have been to witness your students' first experience at the ocean.

I made a memorable trip through San Francisco in the late 80's. I was driving (by myself) from the Mojave Desert to Seattle by way of San Francisco, in a very beat up old Oldsmobile. I was driving through downtown SF when the car broke down right in front of the Transamerica building (the pointy building). What a contrast--my hideous old car blocking traffic in front of this ultramodern skyscraper. The other drivers were not amused. The car had to be towed to a garage, where it took two days to repair. I was traveling on the cheap, so I totally didn't need a costly repair bill and expensive hotel stay. But it gave me an excuse to bum around town for a couple days seeing the sights.

The I-Beam is no longer there. It closed years ago, and is now called "Milk". However, if you remember the bowling alley that was across the street from it, that entire place has been converted into a record store (Amoeba Records).

And wow, this really sounds like a great field trip! I've lived in SF for 2 years and in the Bay Area most of my life and I STILL haven't been to Alcatraz... It looks fun!
