The fact that people are going to cry about rights being infringed upon by making a sexist comment, and drag out the tired "you're just being PC" argument is in itself also being "PC." It plays on both sides of the coin.

You can sugar-coat it, and you can backtrack all you want - but the foundation of the original post was that women have less talent than men. Plain & simple. The intent of the post was to rile people up and it appears that was accomplished. To what point, I'm not sure of. Attention seeking?

I am getting so tired of this crapola, we have enough people here who make judgemental, racist, sexist - whatever comments - and hide behind the "those PC bastards are oppressing my freedom of speech" flag. The simple fact is - if you make an inflammatory comment, don't slam someone else's freedom of speech when they say they don't like it. Accept it and move on.

I wasn't aware that "freedom of speech" had oppression of other's opinions built into it.

My argument isn't about the women suck as musicians post - it's the hypocracy & pandering that gets dragged out over people's opinons.

Oh for chrissakes, of course it has a sexist subtext. I'm just choosing to dismiss it as a joke, choosing to take another meaning to it, play out the argument to the point of ridiculousness, AND respectfully opening it up to level-headed discussion if you so chose. You're free to be serious about it - that's fine - but I don't see the need for you and Wolvie to expand this particular topic to an "all the ills of the world and the NWO" thread, though again, you're free to do so. I say consider picking your battles better than this silliness.

The fact is this started as a flippant remark, you got to have your say, Venkman exposed his attitudes to everyone, and some people harped in with some pretty funny comments, especially Wendy - thus, "FORUM".

It's easy to dismiss such a flippant comment as a joke when you're not part of the group who is the butt of the joke. That's the problem with jokes like this--they use humor to camouflage anger and stereotypes, and gives people permission to say anything hurtful that they want as long as they say "just kidding!" afterward. Look at all the jokes in our culture, and if you weed out the ones that are based on hatred, anger, or stereotypes, you have precious few jokes left. Heck, I even smiled at Peter's original post, and laughed at Wendy's witty tambourine remark. But I'm still bothered by how pervasive these stereotypes are that they form the basis of our jokes.

I find it interesting the way Peter deliberately made an immflamatory comment then sat back to watch the ensuring flames, only reappearing to stoke up the fire. I do like the way he's done it and got the reaction he was after. Quite an amusing threa due to it.
