<br>Although being ugly and teased may build your awareness about the knocks of real life, it can also crush a child. And I could never sit by when there is an answer. I really don't want my kids thinking like I do about their past.

Teach your kids NEVER to tease people!

Also a good point. I can only imagine how hard it is to be a parent and know that one's child is being teased. Kids can be evil. And this, in my mind, is why it would be futile to resort to surgery in order to stop the teasing. If they stop teasing her about her nose, then they would tease her about her hair, or her butt . . . or about getting a nose job.
[/quote]
I totally agree w/ hex here. Kids sure can be mean, and if it's not the nose, then it'll be something else. I also agree that it would be tough for a parent to sit by and watch their kid get teased about something to the point where they'd come home crying everyday.

p.s. I have a large nose, which I rather like, but I guess it's not big enough to have had any teasing about it back in the day.[:I]

I was teased every day in high school & it really sucked. I would have done any thing to change that. About 4 months after high school, I could have cared less. I think everything is HUGE when you're young - and yes, it's hard & awful & you never think it will end - or that you'll get over it. But you do, and you realize that there is a lot more to life than how you look.
I think it's so important to talk to kids about what is important. Good looks are great - but being a good person, being smart and being able to empathize with others is far more important than a nice nose and big boobs.
I think there's too much emphasis on looks - especially for girls. Who are they doing it for? Themselves? Or, are they trying to fit into some ideal? For me, being a good person has little to do with looks.
All the crap will pass - you'll never forget the teasing, but it's a good lesson in life, it makes you stronger, it helps you sympathize with others & I don't think a nose job can do that for you.

I agree with all of that. But just picture your kid coming home every day and you find out that they are going through everything you did. I could never sit back and take it.
But as far as the teasing turning to other things. If the kid gets a nose job, does anyone really think they will tease her for that? Oh look at her...she is beautiful..haha. They don't replace the pickle with a banana. I hear you guys on all your points. And they are true. But me? I am a great parent. It is the best thing I do in life. I'm great at it. But I would do everything first. Talk to my kid about values and friends and life lessons. I would talk to the school. I would threaten the other kids. But in the end, I would do anything and if that means nose job, nose job it is.
Also back to columbine. They did it for revenge. For the stuff we are talking about. All of us outsiders thought about revenge. And a growing problem now is that columbine will happen again. It did at another school. And they caught 2 other groups (at least) planning an attack. This is how deep the problem goes. That some kids committ suicide. That others just can't take it anymore and kill. But this is for another thread.

Hey Philly, sorry that this is short, 'cause I have to run, but I totally disagree with you.

In my experience (as both perpetrator and victim), bullying among teenage girls takes the form of backstabbing and gossip rather than directly teasing someone, and it peaks in junior high, and then declines in high school. And, it is highly irrational--it's based on the person's perceived status in the pecking order, and not so much on factors external to that social ladder.

So, no, I don't think the bullies would all of a sudden say, "Good Heavens, Miss Philly Jr., you're beautiful!" and stop the bullying. (Had to get the new wave reference in.) Bullies aren't rational decision-makers. They would just find something else to pick on. People in my high school certainly gossiped about the two girls in my class who got nosejobs before senior year.

I sympathize, I really do, and I see where you're coming from.

Fix the nose for her no question. I see more and more high school girls getting boob jobs as graduation gifts, so a nose job would be more than welcomed.

Let her keep her "honker".

It worked wonders for Paris Hilton.

Nose job ASAP. More than that I think the late teens are a good time to do it, when one is young and heals fast. The bullying may not stop but your daughter would feel better about herself and react to that differently.

There is a big difference between nose and boob jobs. Having your teen daughter’s secondary sexual characteristics enhanced, that seems wrong to me.

I totally agree with Stella. Very good point. Its not a boob job for a kid. Its something very different. If it was a cleft pallet or a deformed ear, should you send her to school like that to learn that life is tough? Hell no. You and every sane person would have the problem fixed. Why? Why fix those problems and not a huge nose? Its not trying to look different its fixing a problem. Trust me, if your cleft pallet, deformed ear child is being picked on to the point we are speaking of, your getting the surgery.

I'd have her evaluated to make sure she was past any growth issues, and if she wanted a nose job, a nose job she'd get.

Plastic surgery doesn't bother me at all. Hell, I'd have it if I had the money. I'm not scary looking, but there are things (OK, my chin and chest) that I don't like. If it can be fixed and it's something that bothers someone, why not have it done?

Growth issues don't really matter, our nose never stops growing anyway, like paris Hilton's feet. Your new nose will Grow with your face. Do it

Well, I doubt opinion over the internet counts for much, but, personally, I'd do anything to correct god's awful mistakes: In this case, rhinoplasty.
