RIP Alex Toth

Famed comic artist and creator of some of the most famous Saturday Morning cartoons, Alex Toth died this past saturday morning (how appropriate) at the age of 77.

While comic fans will recall his art in many of the Hawkman, Green Lantern and All-Star (Justice Society) comics in the latter half of the 1940s, most of us will better recall his TV creations (mostly for Hanna-Barbera): Space Ghost and The Super Friends. His character designs basically ruled the late 60s Saturday Mornings; besides those already listed, he was also responsible for Space Angel, The Impossibles, The Herculoids, The Mighty Mightor, Hot Wheels and The Fantastic Four (he just redesigned the FF for animation purposes)

Toth's work also appeared in CARtoons Magazine, where he showcased the whimsical side of his work (which is what got him into comics in the first place back in the 40s).

Toth's name rightly belongs with his compatriots Infantino, Kirby, Wood, Crandal, Beck, Eisner and Kane (amongst others). He was a defining artist of the superhero genre in comics and a major influence to many who entered the industry.
