In your opinion, what was the greatest American punk scene, from roughly 1975-1985? That which produced the greatest bands, greatest impact, greatest influence, what have you. I've narrowed it down to the six big ones, with what I feel are the most representative artists.

My personal preference is Los Angeles. All the impact of the New York scene, yet younger and less pretentious.

EDIT: Oh, and please do not argue with me about the geographic placement of the Dead Boys. I don't want to hear it.

I went for NY as they were the progenitors-but please sir give something to Minneapolis/St. Paul-Suburbs-Replacements-Husker Du, et al. The 80s wouldn't have been the same without the twin towns

Hard not to go with New York.

I'd also like to give a little love to Orange County (CA). Before "The OC", there were Social D, Adolescents, TSOL, The Vandals, Agent Orange, The Offspring, and El Grupo Sexo. Could we call it the best Suburban Punk Movement of all time? [:I]

I had to go with Boston since I was smack dab in the middle of it there.
Most of the musicians there at the time were at least acquaitances.

I agree, Blir. Orange County deserves a place on the list. Plenty of the bands you listed played at Safari Sam's in Huntington Beach that were too hard core for the Golden Bear a little further down Main Street.

I have to go with New York, although I think each scene had it's own unique version of punk.

New York's seemed much smarter, and a little (or a lot) artier. New York City in the early to mid seventies was a natural cesspool to breed dissatisfaction, anger, frustrated artists/rockers/actors,etc. (Don't take Offense fellow New Yorkers - but you have to admit it was a different world back then!)

Some of my favorites came out of that scene - Blondie, Ramones, Patti Smith, Miamis, Cherry Vanilla,Heartbreakers, etc. And lastly, punk will always and forever be hooked with CBGBs & Max's for me.

Those are all such great choices!

But I went with Wash DC, b/c at the time I was into many of those bands...GI, DRI, Minor Threat. There was a certain sincerity that appealed to me, while still being loud and fast. Such energy!
But like I said, ALL your choices are terrific choices.

It sucks when no one from SF represents [V]

With SF clubs like The Mabuhay, On Broadway, The Deaf Club, The Stone, The I Beam, The Kennel Club, Tool and Die, The Temple Bueatiful, The Old Wardorf, Winterland, The Filmore, The Warfield, The Farm, The Keystone West in Palo Alto, Berkeley clubs like Keystone Berkeley, Berkeley Sqaure, Gilman, Zelerbach Hall, Ashkenez ect..ect..ect..

We would have 10 cool bands play in 5 diferent clubs all in the same evening. top that!!!

On top of that SF would have several radio station play cool punk and new wave tunes at the same time: KQAK, KSAN, KALX, KPFA, KUSF

Huh? Maybe you meant "inch". [:I]

Anyway, KNAC played new wave til '85 or so and if you lived here in OC, you could get 91X to tune in from San Diego too.

And I gotta mention that I just picked up (Amazon UK), and finally on CD, the first album from one of my fav SF punk bands, The Nuns.

Of course, I did vote for OC, for it did and still does, have the best punk scene.
