If I go any place at all--other than to the compost heap as per my Materialism rating on the other thread--I hope that I'm going to Limbo. Mr. Hex is a practicing Catholic and I am an atheist. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, those who die in original sin (i.e., unbaptized) without having committed "grievous personal sin" go to Limbo: "Now it may confidently be said that, as the result of centuries of speculation on the subject, we ought to believe that these souls enjoy and will eternally enjoy a state of perfect natural happiness[.]" The risk I run is that my atheism, though sincere, may in itself be a grievous personal sin.

According to Evelyn Waugh (author of Brideshead Revisited and other novels and commentary): "Limbo is the place. In Limbo one has natural happiness without the beatific vision; no harps; no communal order; but wine and conversation and imperfect, various humanity. Limbo for the unbaptized, for the pious heathen, the sincere sceptic."

Sounds OK to me.

P.S. Swamp Thing, do you go to church in T-Town? Mr. Hex drags me to St. Pat's sometimes. Haven't gone up in smoke yet.

I'm an active Christian. I feel I don't have to flaunt it as I hope it reflects in my demeaner.

Hex, I knew that there was something intrinsically good about you, besides your sparkling personality--your ability to work in an Evelyn Waugh quote so masterfully. He is one of my all-time favorites!

Someone, ANYONE tell me I'm not alone here.

You're not alone. I'm certainly not a stereotypical Bible-thumping fundy (far, far from it), but I am a believer.

Here comes the hypocrisy that I love. If someone is one here making fun of an ethnic group or a minority and I rush to their defense, it is because I am being "politically correct" and they are just "telling it like it is", but when I make a joke involving religion and you defend it, you aren't being PC? Double standards are real nice to have.

Religion is a choice. If you choose to believe in some higher power, rock on. I can't understand it, but I'll defend your right to it. I will also crack on it when I feel like it.

I'm trying to figure out how the so-called Christian "believers" are the ones advocating slaughtering Iranians because their leaders are fucked. I think the exact quote was "bomb them back to the Stone Age" but I could be off. How does that fit in with the teachings of Jesus? Maybe spending a little more time with the New Testament and a little less time on the NWO might help with some general understanding of what Jesus what actually trying to teach.

Stop worrying about how others feel about your religion. It is between you and your God. It doesn't involve me. If I choose to mock religion, have a little faith that your god is capable of dealing with me. If your god can't, why the #@%$@ would you worship something that weak?

PS - Hutter, this isn't aimed specifically at you. If you choose to think that, cool, but I've called Jimbo out on this, I called Kimiii out, and I will call any war-mongerer out on judging those of us that make simple jokes about religion over those that support policies that murder innocent human beings. Somehow, I think Jesus would be with me and Motors on this.

Great post Beatschool. I don't think you'll find any disagreement here. Maybe if Jimbo was still around you would get a "moral equivalence" or a "Jesus is pro-war" tie in some how...ahh, I long for the good old days. <-- (the Romanticist in me)

I've never understood the concept of religion (the serving of a higher power)...I would be in a subordinate position which is definitely not to my liking. Now, if I could be the focal point of a faith, that might turn my crank.

For those who embrace a religion, that's your choice and right, just as it's mine to view it as the ultimate in futile pursuits.

I don´t bash on God or religion.
It´s not right.. whether you believe in God or not/follow a religion or not.

Abacab66, perfectly put.

Motors, I had forgotten about that quote from W.
When he speaks I try to laugh at the ridiculous crap that spews from his mouth. Otherwise I would be sick to my stomach.

Beatschool, great post.

It is right. In fact it's NECESSARY for anyone who cares about the world enough to want to save it from the ills brought on by this bullshit. Here's a great article:

http://www.atheists.org/Atheism/bash.html

If anything, I'm too kind when addressing this subject. [:(!]

BTW - It's ridiculous to say this isn't the place for these kinds of discussions.

That is a great post beatschool.
I've often been perplexed at the view of many fundamentalists/radical Christians who profess to love their religion or god so much, yet are often the most ardent supporters of war in other lands, bombing, killing, "bringing democracy to the infidels", etc. Huh--funny, the fundamentalist Muslims feel the same way!

It is by no means an easy subject...for centuries, war has been fought over religions. Political divisions, monarchy disputes, divided countries, and so on. But what strikes me is that these terrible and sad schisms have taken place between (or among) different denominations of believers--NOT between athiests and believers. In other words, the low percentage of nonbelievers/ athiests seem to be the least of worries in the big scheme of things.

I think Abacab was sayin' that he doesn't come to the NWO to talk religion. I don't think he was arguin' that the NNNW forum is or is not the place for this topic.

Where's Ben At Work, and does he realize that his nickname is a play on words?
