Thanks for the link for "Heart And Soul [Extended Rock Mix]". A 25th anniversary edition of "Bridge Of Spies" is slated for release later this year. Maybe we'll finally get this mix on CD?

Would anyone happen to have any further information on "Heart And Soul [Extended Rock Mix]"? I received my "Bridge Of Spies" 2 CD / 1 DVD box set today, and this "Extended Rock Mix", clocking in at 5:51, is nowhere to be found. I wasn't able to find it listed on Discogs either, unless it is not credited as such on a 12" release. Listed on disc 2 of the box set is a "Remix", which appeared on the 12", clocking in at 5:05. It has bits and pieces of the "Extended Rock Mix", but the "Extended Rock Mix" has several pieces, especially at the end, that are neither in the "Album Version" nor the "Remix".

The 5:50 Re-Edit was done by Mixfixer (he also did that extended mix of Wham!'s "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go"). Here's what he told me in an email almost 2 years ago...

"Heart And Soul had 2 different 12" singles (you may know this). The first one was pulled quickly, it was a remix of the same arrangement, with the rock beat. I kept that one, i prefered it. The 2nd one i hated, that was a completely stripped down dance/dub mix that didn't sound like the hit.

The only i didn't like about the "rock" 12" was it was missing some of the song (i hate when they do that) .. if i recall it was missing a verse, and the end choruses.

So, warning - this is also a bit crude, and at that time i had to run both versions i used (the LP and the 12") thru an analog mixing board to dub them and also EQ them to sound more alike, so it's a bit over-modulated from that.
Anyway i called this the "expanded rock mix" - it was the 12" that i wanted."

You are awesome. Thank you for this information. All this time I was thinking that it was an official mix and was disappointed that it didn't appear on this new reissue. It wasn't until doing a bit of research these past few days that I started realizing that it was probably a fan made mix.

I was a bit puzzled how this "Extended Rock Mix" was created, but now I think that I figured it out ... well, almost. Mixfinder used the 12" "Remix" (5:05) and "LP Version" (4:17). However, 4:58 and on confuses me in the "Extended Rock Mix". I can only assume that Mixfinder blended the tracks together in order to create that unique outro, especially at 5:30, in which Carol's chorus vocals can be heard without the drums backing. Perhaps a vocal filter was done in order to isolate her vocal for this outro? I don't hear this isolated vocal part in any of the official mixes (I thought that it might be in the "Dub Mix", but I didn't hear it there). Any ideas? The reason that I ask is because I would like to re-create this "Extended Rock Mix" myself using the 2015 remasters. I am thinking that might not be possible, however, so I may just try re-creating a similar version. I am a huge fan of this "Extended Rock Mix", if one hasn't figured that out already. It's one of my favorite extended mixes.

By the way, the problem with the "Remix" (5:05) version is that the last verse and the bridge are swapped in order -- that is, the bridge appears before that last verse in the "Remix" (5:05). It sounds off to anyone used to the original "LP" and "Single" versions.

First off, there's a typo in my previous post. It's Mixfixer...NOT Mixfinder. I am embarrassed by my old eyes! I'll edit my post above.

Second, I would only be guessing how Mark created the ending to his re-edit. But, we did email back and forth a few times regarding how we worked on editing techniques, and we did touch on sampling vocal bits from any acapella-ish parts of a mix/remix. I'll see about sending him an email and link to this post. Maybe, if he's not busy (and I'm not promising anything), you'll be able to ask the source directly.
