... you can't get past an image, an idea, an incident, an association with a loatheful person in your life, etc. that is so unpleasant as to make the song unlistenable or a film unwatchable. Now, I know some of it may be too personal to share in public, so you can also add stuff you've seen on the tellie. For example, I was watching Time Life's info-mertial with Erica Shaffer[:p] and Greg Brady - that 70s Sound Explosion collection or some bullshit like that. They have a pretty decent set of one-hit wonders from way back, but every time they show The Bay City Rollers I kinda shudder at the thought their drummer gets off on child pr0n[xx(] I used to like their one song; kinda upbeat and fun. Now I listen to it and all I get are bad images in my head. You know? Just the thought that perhaps this may have been an on-going thing for a long time and the guy hadn't been caught. Same thing with The Who, Gary Glitter, Aerosmith, and Ted Nugent. I know I'm supposed to separate the artist from the art, but it's kinda difficult, I must say. Strangely enough, I can listen to NON/Boyd Rice, Death In June, Der Blutarsch, Current 93 and David Tibet, et al. without much hesitation in spite of their ideas and philosophy. Worse, is that I can watch a David Hamilton or Catherine Breillat film and see that as "art", even if some of it is exploitative. It's a weird dichotomy where the line between acceptable and revulsion is sometimes blurred.

I get the same creepy feeling from Ferris Buellers Day Off. It was on the other day and every scene with the principle gave me the creeps. He was creepy anyway. Yet surprisingly, I still enjoy Michael Jacksons Off the Wall CD. I guess the good times that the album reminds me of overpower the negative. To bad he turned into a freek.

OMG, Derek was a pervert? [xx(] Given the way-underage profile of the typical Rollers fan, that's especially disgusting. Fortunately, Derek wasn't "my" Roller. My friend H had a crush on him first, and two of my other friends liked Woody and Les, so that left me with fat, suicidal Eric. [:D]

I can listen to Michael Jackson up through the second plastic surgery, which I believe was contemporaneous with "Thriller."

Mr. Hex and I love to blast "Carmina Burana," though there has been a lot of diiscussion about whether Orff got along a little too well with the Nazis. Some years ago the NYT ran a really good essay about whether Carmina was the original "Springtime for Hitler." The essayist concluded that Carmina must have been written as propaganda, because it enjoys so much present-day use in advertising.

I know a deadhead that can't watch the first Grateful Dead movie because she was raped by Leon Gast whose name shows prominently in the credits. She was still living at home and working in the big apple, her first real job, and she started flirting with this guy on the elevator. Went out for a drink with him, bad choice.

This reminds me of Philly's three girls and endless beer story. If she had decided not to go for that drink she might have seen those same credits and thought about what she missed. She would never have imagined what really happened.

A certain very well-known, very openly-gay television producer was once rude to me for no reason. Well, I mean, I lived in the cesspool called Los Angeles for almost 7 years and did some P.A. work to make ends meet, so plenty of television producers were rude to me, but none rubbed me the wrong way like this guy did.

Thanks to that, by default I despise anything he's associated with and secretely hope for its immediate cancellation. Two months ago, I got my wish. Highest-rated show cancelled, baby!

That's the thing. I'm not really sure. The media tends to blow this junk outta proportion that one could hardly call news reporters "journalists". All I remember is that years back, Derek's mug was pasted all over the news with the allegations. I think he actually pled guilty to possession of child pornography or "indecent photographs" featuring blah blah and so-and-so. For all we know, it could've been a photography book that you can get at a bookstore, but nobody ever gave details as to what it was that he possessed other than the general terms. You know how it is, though. Once you get accused of something of that magnitude, it's hard to get it off people's minds. As I said in the opening post, I get it on my mind. I haven't listened to the one album I have by them in ages. With Pete Townshend, Gary Glitter, the guy from Ferris Bueller, Steve Tyler, and the other lot... there's no doubt. I guess it makes for interesting sideshow news to meet my morbid curiosity, but I cannot go listen or look at their work and enjoy it.

The only reason I cannot listen to the newer Michael Jackson stuff is that I don't like it; the bulk of his music now is boring and bland - as if with the bleaching of his skin, he also bleached away the beat of his music. The guy has been a train wreck for a long time. He'll never live the allegations down and, much like the dude from BCR, all we get is a filtered account of what supposedly happened and it doesn't help the guy is super weird[xx(]

I recently found an old vhs copy of Leni Riefenstahl's [i]Olympia[/i] and there's no way to get around the idea(s) it was effectively propagating. Worse is another film I've seen called "The Eternal/Wandering Jew" (from 1940) and that's when it hits me: If it looks and sounds good... it's not as [i]bad[/i][?][}:)]

I do feel a little weird with Death In June stuff in my collection. Honestly, I think it's more of a fetish for them than actually art, but is fetishizing/flirting with Third Reich etc. imagery any better? I'm kinda torn about that one.

I think they're just exploring imagery and peoples' reactions. Whether it's really for art or profit, who knows. But considering that Crisis started out with more of a communist credo before DIJ rolled out their fascist stuff, it's likely the result of just some intellectual gymnastics that artists/musicians are wont to do. Inciting thought with Nazi imagery or examining their methods of mass societal motivation/manipulation seems pretty common and almost passe in music. I guess it really depends on their motivation, and since we don't really know, it's open to our own guiltless interpretation without someone telling us it [i]might[/i] be wrong or right.

IMHO and within reason of course. [;)]
