Expanded Sharing Forum Idea...

Discuss hard-to-find or out-of-print New Wave and '80s Alternative, and share a few songs along the way.
NOTE: requesting songs that are entirely unrelated to the genres discussed here or easily found on CD is strongly discouraged and posts will be enforced as needed.

Expanded Sharing Forum Idea...

TERRIBLE IDEA!

Why even consider such a thing? So the crapfest can continue unabated elsewhere on the site too?? To use that as a portal to promote more people to now come to that "Killer Internet Feeding Trough Site"??? IMHO such a thing opens the door to more noise, the kind of noise that didn't originally attract its members to, the kind of thing that would intrude on the sort of music that many people ARE here for, and the kind of rancorous crap that has already driven off some of the actual NEW WAVE fans.

And if Mike were to explicitely create such a new forum for the "sharing of a greater breadth of mp3s", then he'd be implicitly promoting illegal mp3 sharing. Even now his rather weak discouragement isn't much defense. Obviously this forum was created long before its current state could have been foreseen, where yousendit and rapidshare has taken it in another direction entirely - the open posting of often very common music of all kinds. I see people come here to feed and contribute not a bit to the many interesting discussions that more frequently fall by the wayside.

I'm sure I sound like one of those "good ole days" bemoaners. I'm not. I've gone with the flow through many changes and my enthusiasm and fervent posting has rarely abated. Hey, I love most of the off-topic genres and common songs being requested here - but I don't constantly impose that on the membership, making the real nuggest harder to find. I know every site evolves. I know memberships evolve. But the sheer noise to signal level now is ridiculous. Why promote it further?

BUT!...as I'll always say, it's all IMHO, but it's still a...

No, you don't Blir.

While I don't want to disrespect anyone's craft (mashers, djs and others) I also feel the spirit of this forum is about sharing HARD TO FIND** NEW WAVE music.

I, too, am guilty of requesting non-new wave stuff. I am also guilty of perpetuating the feeding frenzy of the music that has been requested and supplied. But I also think it needs to stop.

I think that an expanded sharing forum would be a bad idea.

**: Hard to find is open for debate. "I don't want to spend $15 bucks on a CD" is not a valid reason something is hard to find.

Au contraire gents..

Before jumping all over the mere suggestion of another discussion forum that you are already labelling as one primarily dedicated to music sharing per se, let me clarify first, that the suggestion was for a discussion forum Specifically intended for DJ related NWO topics, be it remixes/mashups, OOP/white label material (yeah mp3s), club gigs, equipment, recording techniques etc..

Taking my suggestion out of it's original context and make a blanket generalization that it would be soley</B> dedicated to mp3 sharing is not only tad presumptuous but unfair to the members IMO.
(Hence the poll suggestion that was made in the very same post that was previously quoted)

Clearly, the influx of DJ's in recent months has significantly changed the dynamic of this particular forum.

Erstwhile, the musical contributions and discussions have previously centered on rare & HTF 80's NW & related material, they now run the gamut ranging from obscure 70's rock to Italo disco.

However what has emerged is an utterly new and unforeseen assortment of DJ inspired musical selections and requests, the likes of which I have not seen before (and being a former club goer, would like to see more of)

Given the unbridled response, expanded musical content and subsequent 'rancor' perceived by some NWO'rs here merely gives impetus for creating another forum dedicated to things of a 'Deejay Sort' (hence the 'DJ Oriented Forum' suggested <a href="http://www.nwoutpost.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=13672" target="blank">HERE</a>)

Now, is that really too much to ask for?

Well Rich, you have a funny way of selling a "discussion" forum by replying to a Luther Vandross thread and referencing it in there, saying stuff about sharing a greater breadth of music, etc. THAT'S the context you put it in. MY comments weren't the ones out of context. On the contrary, I think it's plain stupid to talk about one thing and not clearly delineate it from another thing when it's such a hot-button topic.

I can totally see the merits of a NEW WAVE DJ "discussion" forum. It makes complete sense since many of us have DJ'd and/or like DJ-oriented music. But do I want to see DJ mixes of Luther Vandross and Paula Abdul in it and have it be a portal for such crap and drawing more said-minded people here? HELL NO! Its purpose needs to be clearly defined and moderated.

I think it is hugely significant that the site is called NEW WAVE OUTPOST. Yeah, it's New Wave (in all its various forms and relations). BUT it's also an "outpost", a refuge, a gathering place, a haven away from other crap music and especially crap 80s sites. This all sounds pretty damned elitist I know, but I don't want the masses at the gates storming in and littering it with crap.

I may have jumped to conclusions, but your original post scared the hell outta me. If you have other intentions, you needed to have spelled it out better.

Granted Mike, it was not the best thread to 'float' the idea as I was preparing to frame it out better in the form of a poll.

However since the polling feature is not currently active (as you have called attention to on previous occasions) I was subsequently unprepared to followup and properly present the idea to the membership.

Honestly, I was simply trying to assuage some member concerns regarding perceived predjudicial exclusion of certain musical content in making that suggestion.

Yeah.. I Know, being too P.C. for my own good[:I]

No, I've only been here the past half-year or so, and I agree with you. Keep the leechers away!

Personally, I don't see any need for a special deejay forum, for either discussion or filesharing.

If anyone feels the need for one, they should post what specific past threads would belong in the deejay forum.

IMHO both points of view are right somehow:

on the one hand it would be a good idea to create a 'DJ oriented' forum where DJ related matters/music/etc could be discussed (this way these threads wouldn't be in the 'Obscure80's/MFV, CD-R's & MP3 trading' forum; and I don't see why anyone should forbid other members to deal with certain topics)
and on the other hand, I totally agree with Blir, Tiger, Obs, ... I think lately there have been many requests/posts that aren't rare at all (i.e. Tragedy & Mystery by C.Crisis) or that have nothing to do with New Wave (Paula Abdul, etc).

I would like NWO members to trying to stick a bit more to the original spirit of this site and requesting/sharing only rare/obscure 80's NW songs - and what to consider NW is a complex matter that could be long discussed -.

hmmm Well I just finished reading the posts in this thread and here are my two cents. I came here to get loads of final vinyl including italo-disco, dark wave and heck maybe even the odd industrial tune. I also came here to share what I have. Broadening the forum to include other things seems like a scary idea to me. Why tamper with something that ain't broke??

being one of the new guys, and interested in the 80's club material, i can't help feel like this is directed towards "us". I have already asked once if the DJ/club material is OK and was told it was, but here we are.

i get the paula abdul issue..no question there

let's look at what we see when we first join here..new wave..obscure80's...rare...mp3 trading.
1. i don't have the deepest vocabulary so can someone share your definition of obscure??
2. rare. If i can't get it at best buy it's rare. most of the 80's club material is out of print and imported. Is that rare?? Generally the only way to find this material is to a. go to a specialty shop and fear being hit on by some homo vinyl collector in his back room or b. find a DEEJAY who still has the records.

Which goes back to the topic, dj's, while yes they all have their own remixes, also have the original records and some are cool enough to share.

So yes it's 80s and yes its rare and hard to find. and by the way, a certain thread on this music is pushing 4000 hits, which has to be great for your amazon and itunes banner ads at the top here.

Have a great day

I'm going to have to take the side of keeping it to "80s new wave". I'm not generally interested in the other genres of music. That's why I'm here, for the new wave.

Well, what can I say that hasnt already been said?
Since I'm new here, whatever is decided here is fine by me,I just want to make sure what that is before I start posting things as to NOT piss other people off!
Completely agree with the "This is a New Wave Forum - stay on the subject material stance." Still if something is truly rare ,I would hope there would be an exception for this. Seeing as that this is a great community of music lovers and collectors I would hate to let the resource go wasted.

Thanks for letting me be here guys and gals!

Why not just start a DJ site?..oh wait, that's been done...about a million times. Why further water down the essence of NWO by stretching it's original focus and purpose?

In the past 3 weeks, I've seen multiple requests here that have nothing to do with New Wave, were hardly obscure, or for that matter even 80's in origin.

In the Luther Vandross thread I (sarcastically) posted:

"You know, I've requested this song numerous times, but nobody on this site has helped. Fat lot these people know about New Wave and Obscure 80's music.

A pox on all of you!"

to which I receive the response:

"Eight6, you likely haven't had much response to this request because you are on "New Wave Outpost" and not "Obscure R&B Outpost". But, I'm eclectic in my listenings, so I'm pleased to oblige. Now, remove the pox!"

People know and understand the intended focus of this site, but it would seem that it is easier to just ask for any song to be posted than to go find it oneself.

C'mon, Sanford and Son theme, Paula Abdul, yadda yadda yadda...I would swear the site is run by Canadians. Show some backbone and pull back on the reins before the New Wave Outpost becomes the New Wave Outhouse.

I totally agree with British. While I am interested in other types of music, I can go to other sites for those. When I'm here I want new wave, nothing else.

I don't mind scaling back what I share to strictly pretty hard to come across tracks, if that is better for this site. I must admit I do enjoy sharing some tracks from some fairly obscure artists that are not new wave, but again, since this is an 80s site, I can curtail doing that. I just think there is so much great stuff I'd like to share, maybe turn some people on to some other things, maybe not. Maybe a section for mp3 shares of non-80s??? But again, only things that are not well known kind of thing. Some of the things I might share may not be too hard to find, but still be very obscure, thus my interest in sharing some of this. I have always tried, even on the hub, to not have any files with the easy to find stuff from any era or genre, since this stuff can be easily had just about anywhere. So both the hub and here, I'd like to be able to share some oddities, obscurities, etc...from across the decades, if this is acceptable. I will respect any site/moderator decisions as a member. I just get so damn giggly excited (ok, not really) to be able to offer up some gems from other eras, and clearly there are lots of folks on NWO that dig lots of other stuff. Not sure what the best answer is, but I'll live with whatever decision is made out of respect for this site.
