A New Music Discussion Forum?

Discuss hard-to-find or out-of-print New Wave and '80s Alternative, and share a few songs along the way.
NOTE: requesting songs that are entirely unrelated to the genres discussed here or easily found on CD is strongly discouraged and posts will be enforced as needed.

A New Music Discussion Forum?

Postby 2Nu » Wed Jul 05, 2006 4:34 am

OK Folks,

Mike P. has enabled the polling feature here..AT LAST![:D]

So let's go to the polls to find answers to the 'Burning Question' concerning a new spinoff music discussion forum.

There are definitely opinions for and against such an offering.

Try to give it some thought so we can make an informed decision ok?

There are plenty of sites that cater to DJ's now, why make this yet another one? Nothing against those here who are DJ's, it's just that in my opinion that adds nothing to the unique nature of this site.

As well, if MikeP was having concerns with the amount of music posted/linked here, this kind of move should substantially increase that concern.

I voted for the last one. "But One That Is Geared To Something Not Listed Above (Post & Elaborate)"

My suggestion. Create a new forum with a single "sticky" post that list all the wonderful "general" 80's and DJ sites availble on the internet. Add some instructions on how to use Google. At the bottom a friendly message like "Thanks for stopping by!" This forum would be closed from posting.

I (think) the last thing we want is the NWO to become a general 80's site or cater to club (non-new wave) DJ's.

eight 6, show me another board where I can request poesie noire, call it heaven, gruesome twosome, etc. i've been looking for years.

i voted for a DJ forum, as long as its RARE 80's IMPORTS, out of print, hard to find, new beat, etc.

Nothing against you 6400, and you do have a point...my point is all those guidelines are currently posted, yet we have requests for Paula Abdul, Luther Vandross etc. There's already a bad draft coming from the door and it's only opented a crack, what happens when it is thrown wide open?

See Swampthing's post above, he's nailed it with the last sentence.

I originally found this forum from a thread someone posted in the 80sXchange,it was posted in the Dance forum. Though I do llove tracking down 80s club music, I love all genres of music New Wave included.

What Im always looking for as a music collector is the hard-to-find, out-of-print, albums, songs, remixes, edits, dubs, you name it ect that I can not go into the local music store and purchase and/or go to iTunes or Amazon and order.
For example there are soundtracks from the 80s that never had a soundtrack release (Ferris) or songs that were in the movie but not on the soundtrack.(Talk about pain in the ass to get a hold of!) We could go on and on about multitude of artist that the record industry is "holding hostage" and wont re-release becasuwe they dont think they can make a buck of it, is that any reason why I still cant have those songs? Let's face it alot of material from the 80's regardless of genre is not available for one reason or another. There is a great deal of material that never made the transfer from vinyl to cd,if it was ever released again at all.Keep the integrity of the board, this is NWO but give the the material Im discribing a place here. It would be one more reason for someone to visit and become a member and they just might learn something about New Wave and get turned on to the format.

This is the material regardless of genre I think should be allowed.

I voted for the 3rd option.

magic!

I voted for #3...don't you all GET IT...SEPERATE FORUM!! This way, less infiltratration to the PURITY of New Wave Outpost forum w stuff like Luther, Paula..I myself do stand guilty of such an offense...just...we all know how, say...anything 80's often gets labeled New Wave...people like me sometimes get carried away w posts and requests...actually, it's a sincere compliment and shows that these "outsiders" DO like to friendliness here and just want to push it ..maybe slightly sometimes in a direction that's just perfect to their own musical tastes. Let these OT (OFF TOPIC) or tangents be heard but just sonewhere else.

Try some of these It’s not that hard to find information on the Internet.

http://www.djforums.com/forums/
http://80s.tuneforums.com/
http://www.audioenz.co.nz/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=17

I’m not going to come here to request information about Elvis Presley just because I couldn’t find it elsewhere. The obligation doesn’t fall on everyone else because you couldn’t find it somewhere. There’s always the alternative – start your own board.

Oh, and Eight6, when you get some spare time, show me a board where I can request an Acura for $500 – they came out in the 80s.[;)]

Of course..the bottom line is...this forum IS CALLED NEW WAVE OUTPOST and the founders chose that for a reason.
If it works out w the seperate forum, great, but I feel above all that the original concept here and the moderators MUST be respected; and fact is, there ARE other forums out there that cater to mainstream dance. The Owners and Moderators and Core of supporters MUST have the final word.

My neighbor has one: however it appears to have cinderblock wheels. I'm sure $500.00 will do the deal. Hell, I might buy it for you if I can get rid of the eyesore.

I vote no expansion, for two reasons. First, I think the NWO should focus on NW (in a big tent definition), and second, I think the NWO shouldn't go further down the path of being a substitute for P2P.

My concerns relate to file sharing, a topic about which I admit I don't know that much, so pardon me if my terminology is incorrect.

As a fairly longstanding NWO member I've grown concerned that so many of the threads here have become thickets of yousendit links. Often the requests and offerings are for songs readily available on CD (OK, maybe not at Best Buy, but at amazon or specialty retailers such as Ideal Copy) or even at iTunes. Though I don't know the specifics, from some other posts here at NWO I've inferred that file sharing may have lead to the demise of another New Wave website.

IMHO, defining and enforcing the criteria for sharing files should be at least as big of an issue as whether it's Joy Division or Paula Abdul in the files. I think that the criteria for mp3 sharing need to be tightened up considerably by limiting shared files to OOP or MFV. That may not constitute a fair use defense, but I think it's a good place to draw the line.

Please note that I'm not judgmental here (I've clicked on a few links myself), merely risk-averse. I want to protect the NWO.
