Expanded Sharing Forum Idea...

Discuss hard-to-find or out-of-print New Wave and '80s Alternative, and share a few songs along the way.
NOTE: requesting songs that are entirely unrelated to the genres discussed here or easily found on CD is strongly discouraged and posts will be enforced as needed.

Well Punk isn't new wave, should that be excluded? No more clash trading.
I personally don't see anything wrong with people requesting other genres. In other sections non new wave music is discused and talked about openly. It's a fact that everyone here along with their love of 80's new wave also enjoys other music as well, so why cant we share that as well. There isn't an over abundance of it for the most part it is new wave trading. I dont see how a new page of non new wave trading for new wavers would hurt, just avoid that section if it offends you better yet just avoid the sanford and son threads in the current trading section if it offends you. That sanford and son post ended up with Ollie mentioning and posting a song that i had never heard and enjoyed listening to, sooo, how was that bad, i mean... is'nt that what it's all about... the music!!

I guess the problem with these kinds of discussions is that it all starts sounding so damned militant. That's not what I or likely others really want. Just some balance with some understanding certainly for the occasional whacky post - I once put up the Space 1999 title track for chrissakes! It's just the constant OT and common track barrage from some quarters.

As for your posts Grunch, I've never not enjoyed them. I think even when they're not new wave per se, they always have a thread of alternative power-pop or other similar type of sound running through them. They're invariably obscure too. Personally, I competely welcome these types of posts. I'm not suggesting being close-minded to related things.

There's no clear line I guess, but the irony is that it's often clear when the line is crossed. Tough call. F&*k I don't know! [V]

Yeah, agreed that you'd hate to shut off such serendipity. The biggest problem I see with more NNW forums though is that it'll attract more of the non-specific feeding and it WILL spill over to other forums. I figure why go there at all?

I suppose it boils down to what actually constitutes 'New Wave' and how strictly the definition of the genre is enforced......
Or maybe what the more militant/pigheaded/gobshite members consider 'New Wave'..
Seems if you deviate from that definition by the tiniest amount you get your faced rubbed in it and become considered a waste member of the forum...[B)]

Even if you possess a significant knowledge of, and collection of, New Wave 80's material....

Well I guess I will continue to post songs I think are hard to find, obscure, etc. across the decades, unless I am requested not to do so, particularly if even a few people get to discover some excellent music they might not have otherwise known. That's what excites me, finding music I somehow missed out on over the years. So look forward to some more relatively obscure (as far as I know anyway) tracks.

I have certainly been guilty of posting non-new wave songs. In hindsight, I really regret that if it's generated more requests/posts of this type.

Personally, I wouldn't want to see a DJ mix forum here. It would be cool if people would post their own home-made mixes, but how often would that really happen? Most often they're label-released mixes that are probably still copyrighted. If someone has done their own mix - post it in the obscure thread - many of us appreciate that stuff.

I would hate to see the site deviate too far from new wave (how ever that is defined.) I would also hate to see a huge influx of people who add nothing but requests, and see this as a free way of getting a song. There are many P2P sites for that.

I'm all for people posting things that fall within this genre, things that are out of print, things that were never in print, etc. I think that's easier to do with new wave/punk/etc. It's much harder to figure out what is in print & out of print when it comes to dance remixes since there seems to be an endless stream of comps released every month.

I don't know if I've added anything to the conversation, but I do think non-new wave requests have taken a life of their own & would hate to see any ramifications from that.

I've been posting tracks and albums here and by email for ages now and have discovered many great tracks that have been made available due to the kindness of posters on here.

I feel that requests of Luther Vandross and Paula Abdul could be the start of a slippery slope unless it's stopped now as the last thing I want is this place to resemble is another generic 80s website complete with RIAA attention-grabbing posts.

By its very nature DJ mixes are rare as they were designed to attract clubbers which is a very small fraction of the music-buying market. It could work PROVIDING the only tracks posted were ones by acts that were only designed to be released in clubs and nowhere else.

I realise these are a set of very inflexible conditions and are unlikely to work here due to the easy-going nature of the place.

I would have no issue with any request I make being deleted if it was inappropriate (better not to make them in the first place I know!!) and no, I'm not looking for a free-for-all 'cheese-fest' forum and hope that doesn't become the trend.

I've been on other forums where anything that is seen as not keeping with the place gets jumped on by the regulars like a pack of jackals so in comparison this place is easy going.

I too am not looking for a 'cheese-fest' forum and hope it doesn't become the trend. Thanks to people on here, I have listened to new artists to which my first thoughts were "how the hell wasn't this a hit??" and long may THAT trend continue.

Eight6, my apologies as regards your reply to DODi. I reread it, and caught the sarcasm. It must've been the heat yesterday, but you may have missed my tongue in cheek attempt at humour.

I am new to the site, but I've warmed to it quickly. I've always loved the music, but throughout the course of one's life, you try on new things. Well, things have finally come full circle, and I find myself having "come" home, with a renewed vigor to the music that was never a fad for me, but always a place I'm grateful to retreat into when the world gets oppressive. I grew up with the old early 80's punk bands and soon gravitated toward new wave and it's new romantic offshoot in particular.

I guess you have to be v-e-r-y clear to the passerby, what you allude to when you have banners that read "The 80's" and forums that read "Obscure 80's/MFV, CD-R's & MP3 trading". The 80's can be widely read to encompass ALL 80's music not just new wave, u-n-l-e-s-s you remember you are on "New Wave Outpost". New wave has never encompassed R & B for me, although some new wave has those elements. And some R & B has new wave elements like Marvin Gaye's "Sanctified Lady" for instance, but that still doesn't make it a new wave song.

I think the following link provides a working definition of the genre.

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=77:381

I think it is in the best interests of the site to honor it's namesake. I think new wave and the genres that tie into it are more than enough to digest. If you have a dj section, let's stick to new wave club mixes. If R & B, and t.v. jingles are an interest I am reasonably assured that there are other sites to cater to said interests. I'm not sure if the site has a mission statement, but maybe it should. Something along the lines of promoting the music the sites named after, through education by way of discourse and exchange of music, etc. I thought I knew a lot before I got here, but all I've learned is that I know nothing. I am being further educated in the music and discovering great bands that passed beneath
my notice back in the day. So to me, I can dispense with the radio, a lot of this is like brand new music and better than most of it's imitators. This is just my opinion, and we all have one of our own. I've enjoyed reading all of yours. Thanks for taking the time to read mine. Peace. Out

1. i don't have the deepest vocabulary so can someone share your definition of obscure??

My definition is stuff that isn't easily available, either at Best Buy, Amazon, or more specifically, Amazon's Marketplace for a reasonable amount of dollars. If it costs $50 to buy a single standard release CD, feel free to share that here :).

If people know of other sites that deal with dance, etc, genres, pipe in with the URLs so we don't need to have this discussion anymore.

Let's hope this place still exists when I'm back from my holidays. I took me a while to read all the posts of this thread and actually I'm not sure now why I took the time to bother...
The reason I came here in late November was all the nice obscure bands I'd never heard of an which sounded great. BTW, the record industry made a good buck since then as I also purchased a lot of what I liked (if it was available). Since May it's becoming less interesting for me as there's an obvious shift to cheesy 80s crap, stuff I hated then and I haven't changed my mind. See "Now and Then" is okay, but every day...this rubbish?!? The same goes for all those requests for readily available songs (e.g. "everything by the Sisters of Mercy", C'mon...)only because some people don't want to use a P2P network and like to take the easy way.
I hate to say it, but this place will be finished very soon if this continues...and of course those who ruined it will forget in no time.
And the rest of us will remember NWO the way we do Torchomatic.
Maybe some censorship would be ok (God, I hate to suggest such a thing, but I don't see how you can prevent people from taking over this place. At least for a while, till all those leechers have vanished..?

I agree, a bit of censorship would benefit this forum - not only musically. Homophobic comments like the one above should be considered unacceptable, as well as racist and sexist bs. Period. Its amazing how quickly this has gone down the toilet within the last couple of months. Then someone like Grunch shows up and saves the day (as well as the old guard, you know who you are).
