hi dos anyone know why vh-1 classic hardly ever plays rare videos?they seem say for instance to only show too shy by kajagoogoo and only well known video.they only show rare stuff now on the show the vault at 4-6 am 3 days a week.

I don't know the answer, but I'm not surprised. I keep waiting for the day when they *really* ruin it and begin playing crappy ass movies and hop on the celebrity-obsessed bandwagon, too.

If I sound bitter, it's because I am. I hate that both MTVs suck ass, and I hate that VH-1 blows now, too, with it's 7,000,000th airing of --insert crappy movie here-- and it's ridiculous celebrity-based crap (although I will confess to watching "Super Group.")

You missed their heyday. Over a span of 3 years of contact with the music programmer and general manager of the channel, I managed to get over 5 hours of obscure New Wave videos in rotation, many of which may now be completely out of rotation, or will make an occasional appearance on The Vault.
I also encouraged the idea of the All Request Hour, which they destroyed from day 1 by only including 3 authentic requests (on average) a show. I also struggled for ages to get a classic Alternative show on the air. This was the idea they were most resistant to, and it only appeared once they opened the 90's floodgates and allowed that Grunge garbage to enter their playlist. As much as I tried to make them understand the concept of the show, as was always made clear, was to play classic Alternative videos before Grunge ruined everything, they were complete idiots.
After that final insult, I dumped the channel in December of 2004 and haven't looked back. I do occasionally look at the playlists that dilligent viewers post on the VH1-C message board, only to see the same shit in rotation they had going in 2001. It's not going to get better. These things only get worse.

i watch it and watch but hardly ever see anything rare except the vault and some rare new wave on the alternative.i keep hoping to see say the video for which man are u by tommy tutone but just get jenny/867-309.i hate/despise vh-1 and the mtvs.

Except for The Vault, VH1 Classic blows major chunks. They air The Vault at 3 am. and have the balls to air the same episode three times except for changing 1 or 2 videos. Totally lazy lameass programming. Airing 7 new episodes of The Vault a week would be all I need. They can air whatever they want the other 22 hours a day.

Thanks for all the work you did to get all those obscure videos to air. I used to tape more videos in 1 day than I do in 6 months now. Did you have any say in getting The Stabilizers, Rhythm Corps, The Railway Children, or The Trash Can Sinatras played? Please apply for the programming directors job. [:)]

Can't say that I was responsible for those videos you listed. There was a devoted batch of members of the VH1-C board who used to post requests and feedback on a regular basis. Both the programmer and the General Manager said they liked the "passion" I exhuded in my postings, which is how the direct contact began. The general manager was a real dope, terrified to take chances with the programming - hence the fact it took so long for the show ideas to appear. The music programmer on the other hand was very open to my requests, and regularly added them to rotation based on lists I provided directly to him, (which often included videos other members wanted to see as well). Things were going good at first until people started posting messages of praise for the videos I was selecting, while criticising the other videos in rotation for being "common" and "burned out". Eventually, jealousy developed from old Mikey the programmer, and I gradually fell out of favor. I gladly offered to program 'The Alternative' by sending playlists, though by that time it was just about over.
If interested, here is a decent selection of the videos I did get in rotation. I'm not sure how many of them still appear from time to time, but it was great while it lasted:

Hey, is there anyway I could get an mpeg copy of ICEHOUSE - We Can Get Together. I have not seen it in more than 20 years and remember loving it at the time -- I taped a bunch of videos off of MTV back in the early 80's (including the aforementiond Icehouse) around the time of Princess Diana's wedding to Charles, but that tape is long gone. I keep checking youtube.com to see if it's posted anywhere and of course it isn't.

You have a bunch on your list that I said "I'll record when they air again". It's been 4 or 5 years and they still haven't aired. I'll be sending you a list of the videos I have for trade and hope we can exchange a dvd or two.

All of those videos, and a ton of others I recorded from the channel from other great viewer requests, are preserved on data DVD's as MPEG2 files so I could custom make DVD's for myself. Luckily, I got into DVD recording early, so was able to capture all that I wanted in digital.

The Icehouse video is 128 MB's. Not sure how to get it to you. Is this something I could post on YouTube? I've not looked into that site other than casual viewing.

As for youtube.com, I don't know how it works -- I too am a casual (but registered) viewer there. Seems lik most of the music videos posted there are about 9-15MB -- there was a recent thread on how to download videos from youtube and the instructions helped me learn how to do so.

It's sad that VH-1 Classic jumped the shark 1-2 years ago. I used to watch it all day and see plenty of obscure videos I never heard of. Heck, it even got me to buy an album or 2.

But nope, let's bring in the top 40 stuff and "programs". I was also disappointed that it only has 8 original hours of programing per day. With all those videos you would think they could have several more hours.

Youtube on the other hand has more videos than vh1 classic will play. All hail the new king, YouTube. Sure the quality's lower, but better than waiting hours on end.

I went to youtube and figured it out. I compressed the 138 MB MPG2 file into an 82 MB MPG1 file. It took 30 minutes to upload through a cable modem, so if I do any more I'll have to make them smaller.

Uh oh, now I'm on to something. I like this little concept, so I've spent a good part of the morning compressing more videos and uploading them. Some people may recall my old Live 365 station "Rubellan Radio". I'm thinking of making this something similar, though it appears to be quite time consuming. The upload speed to YouTube only seems to be an average of 50 KBPS, and I have a cable connection. This may be a great way to see some lost rarities or discover something not previously heard.
