Bands that lasted TOO long

R.E.M. after Up or maybe after New Adventures... the thing is that I do like Up.
And Oasis should really say goodbye. The first three albums were good but the rest.... yuk!!!!!
The Cure after Wish could have retired in glory... but well....
New Order??? No!!! No retirement, never, never, never (sorry I'm having a post-traumatic shock). After Technique??? What??? We would have missed on Republic. [:D]
Depcehe Mode... they have stramge highs and strange lows (ha!) but their last album is really something.

The Church: I think Starfish is rather dull and over rated. Gold Afternoon Fix was passable background music, but Priest=Aura was their best release in years. After that they were nothing more than long winded, drugged out dullness.

Duran Duran: Ragged Tiger has a few good tracks, but after the original 5 were no more, I was bored. That funky white boy soul doesn't work for anyone.

XTC: They were always a spotty band, but the last CD I own is Skylarking. I'm lucky if I find a small handful of songs to like on any album.

Devo: There was some great stuff on Oh No It's Devo, and even a few on Shout, but Total Devo was shit.

Spandau Ballet: I really like Journey's To Glory, but after they dumped New Romantic, they should have been drowned. By the time of that terrible Lifeline song and video, I wanted to beat them all with bats.

Eurythmics: In The Garden was a masterpiece, Sweet Dreams and Touch were a bit spotty. After that they were bland and boring.

I tend to agree but I guess people have got another 30 years to fill til they retire haven't they?!And it's not like the movies where it's all about looks.Maybe they enjoy creating music that much. That said though, The Rolling Stones are taking the piss methinks! I think somewhere around 50 is a nice age to retire gracefully from music unless your RUSH they can go on forever for me I love them!I get your point entirely though, I also think it's the number of albums too like past 5 with alot of bands and they seem to be on shakey territory.

XTC..I actually liked Apple Venus and listen to that one regularly. (Knights In Shining Karma, Your Dictionary ect..good stuff)

ABC ..Ok so I like How To Be...It was a decent record. Really though they hired two members just for esthetic!

Duran Duran: After the Wedding Album things just went off the radar....Now that theyre all back together ..too little too late I suppose.

Erasure: Arent they doing country records now? ROFL!

Depeche Mode: Their last good CD was SOFAD until now. Good job.

Pet Shop Boys : Release, I actually liked it really wasnt much differnt than Behavior.Johnny Marr and all.

Poor REM alas I once knew ye.

U2: love them or hate them they'll be around for sometime to come. Though I am so glad they do not sound like Joshua Tree anymore.

I am possibly one of the very few people who is fully appreciative of XTC's [i]Mummer[/i]. I know they are slagged off mercilessly for nearly everything post-[i]English Settlement[/i], but I am really partial to the album and all of its rural Angloness. However, I really could do without much of their later releases and absolutley couldn't get into their later very commercial "psycheldelic-folk-mod-pop" thing. I think they should have called it quits after [i]Skylarking[/i] - and even that one wasn't too thrilling.

Siouxsie and the Banshees should have quit IMO after [i]Through The Looking Glass[/i]. I think that cover-album of bands who influenced them would have been a nifty swansong.

Devo, although I liked "Good Thing" quite alot.

OMD: Dazzle Ships was their last good record. What a disappointing 3rd act.

The Damned: Should've really buried it after "Strawberries"

Ahhhh....you make the Sting fan that I have inside arise [;)]. I have to admit that certain solo Sting albums are pretty mediocre but there are others that are really good like Nothing like the sun, Ten Summoner's tales and Mercury falling. Those three albums are filled with good songs... nice arrangements and kick-ass lyrics [:D]. Of course, I like The Police better (god knows I love The Police... maybe more than Joy Division [:D]) but Sting as a solo artist has also made great albums.

I was the type who would buy the latest Sting release without a single preview, until that seething dung heap of sell out goodness named Sacred Love crawled into the Sting bin. NLTS is still my absolute fave, and I saw him on that tour and on MF, but I actually passed on seeing him on the SL tour.
Gotta give him props on the All This Time dvd...I can watch that without ever growing bored. BUT, I did get his cover of Hole in My Life from iTunes essentials, and imho, it sucked chrome from a bumper.

Duran Duran - Lost a lot of appeal after the semi-break up but Continued to produce the odd great song. Now producing great songs again everyone is back together IMHO.

THE CURE - the 90es were already a hard time, then returning with Bloodflowers in 2000 + staging the brilliant trilogy show in berlin in 2002 - that would've been a good time to end on a high - what do they do? go into the studio, to record that utter crap selftitled album... they could have stopped with Disintegration, they should have stopped with Trilogy... but now it is all gone down the drain!

All the Cure have been is Robert Smith with backing band. He keeps talking about a solo album?? How is this to sound any different?
I think he's either really bored or just trying to hard now , all the hooks and pop sensibility they had have dried up since Wish! I have every release up to this point but the last two get little play.
