MOBILES - The rare and unreleased

Postby Rubellan » Sun Jul 23, 2006 1:44 am

As some may recall, I worked on a CD reissue of the classic 1982 album by the New Romantic band MOBILES. The CD has been in limbo due to the lack of a required signature, but I wanted to post a few rarites from the CD. Some may also recall, I posted messages here in search of a rare single by them called 'Build me up Buttercup'. It turned out the reason it was so hard to find was because it was never officially released! The only copies known to exist are white label test pressings. A kind fan in Germany was good enough to allow me to use his rare single to remaster from.

Since the CD is in limbo, I wanted to post links to those two rare songs, as well as a rare remix from the CD. In the liner notes for the CD, the band explain how they were forced by the record company to do a cover version, since at that time Phil Collins had a hit with his dreadful 'You can't hurry love'. The band hated doing it, and hated the song, which may have contributed to why it was shelved. It certainly is a noticeable difference to the other great music the MOBILES recorded. Though the band did not really want it on the CD, I included it purely for completists. Don't judge the band on this song, as the other two songs are far more in line with their original sound.

Thanks for taking the time to share this. Quality work!

And, yeah, I can see why the band might want to distance themselves from the cover (and why the record company thought that it might work).

'Build Me Up Buttercup' sounds like Bucks Fizz (when they're good)! What a shock. Thanks Scott for posting these RARE gems. I hope they get the signature sorted out soon.

oh and did I mention they sound fantastic [;)]

Thanks for the kind words on the mastering. I've been assured the CD will still happen, though the problem is Sanctuary music is in financial turmoil, and signing the final paperwork is far from their #1 priority. Soon, hopefully...

For the hell of it, I uploaded the "Raw" version of 'Don't pay the axeman'. It took me 4 hours to remaster the song to the version you heard in the original posting. Here is the completely unmastered version, just to give you an idea of how challenging some source material can be:

Not having heard the band's previous work, I think that "...Buttercup" sounds like a cool little '80s artifact. Not earth shattering, but definitely something worthwhile...

Then again, hearing their other stuff, I can see why this is not thought of as highly as their original work!

It's kind of the same, I guess, for every band. I don't know how many times a friend has started liking a band the same exact moment I stopped liking them (R.E.M.'s Document album is a prime example! And U2's War album.....)

Still, hope to see this on CD soon.

Rubellan, can you please re-post the songs you already posted here so that I can DL? I'm also looking forward to your reply to my e-mail I recently sent.

Cheers,
