WOXY Online Future Not So Bright

In January, Balogh Broadcasting Company Inc. announced the sale of heritage Modern Rock WOXY/Cincinnati to First Broadcasting Investment Partners for $5.6 million. In the same breath, Balogh expressed hope that 'OXY -- one of the last independently-owned, truly adventurous Alternative stations still standing -- would survive on the Web. But even before the station sale reaches the closing table, a memo to listeners posted on the 'OXY website casts doubt on OXY's online future.

"Over the past three months we've been looking for sponsors or investors who could help us fund this very expensive venture into the future," the memo reads. "We've talked with many, many potential partners, but as of now, it's not looking good. There are still some active conversations, but every day that goes by makes it less and less likely that we will find a funder."

"Unlike traditional AM and FM radio, where the cost of operating the transmitter is fixed no matter how many people listen, on the Internet, costs to transmit increase for each additional person that tunes in," the memo continues. "With the station's online audience approaching 50,000 listeners and growing every month, the already substantial costs continue to rise with no significant revenue stream to pay for them."

WOXY says they they've researched alternative scenarios, including moving to a listener-supported subscription service. But "even in best case scenarios, reasonably priced subscriptions would not create enough revenue to cover the costs of creating and delivering 97X,"or offer a "viable, long term solution."

It's expected that WOXY's last day on the air (and possibly on the Web) will be on or before May 13.

Well, they lasted online for two years but the great WOXY really is finished now. They're gone Friday, September 15th.
